American Tourist Punched For Giving Nazi Salute In Germany

Drunk American tourist's Nazi salute sparks German punch-up

According to officials in Germany, the incident happened at around 8:15 a.m. local time Saturday outside a café in the center of Dresden in eastern Germany.

The police have launched a procedure for the use of "symbols of unconstitutional organizations" by the tourist.

The unnamed 41-year-old American tourist was heavily intoxicated, according to police. The tourist, who sustained minor injuries, was apprehended by police, although the attacker fled the scene and remains at large.

However, the American tourist is also under investigation, as his actions violate current German laws relating to the display of Nazi slogans or symbols.

The Nazi salute, along with other symbols of Nazism such as the swastika, are banned in Germany in most contexts. He is wanted for questioning by Dresden police.

It's the second time in August that tourists have gotten themselves into legal trouble for giving the Nazi salute. They were later freed after posting a 500 Euro bail.

The tourists received a relatively light punishment, as displaying such gestures or brandishing certain Nazi memorabilia can result in a prison sentence of up to three years in Germany.

But as one British paper pointed out, those who know the history of the Nazi salute should know not to do it.
