United Nations warns of escalation if no Al-Aqsa solution by Friday

It is the third holiest site of Islam and houses the Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa mosques. The detectors fueled massive Friday protests, and warnings of more to come.

Mladenov said he urged council members to use their influence with Israel and the Palestinians to encourage them to de-escalate tensions and to preserve access for worshippers.

This will presumably reduce tensions significantly in the near-term, though the status of the mosque and its place within Israeli occupied territory will continue to be a sore spot in Israeli-Palestinian relations going forward.

The prime minister's office denied that Jordan had demanded the detectors be removed as a condition of allowing the embassy staff to leave Amman for Israel.

Jordan initially said he could leave only after an investigation while Israel insisted he had diplomatic immunity.

The timing of the events - the evacuation of the diplomats, followed by the removal of the metal detectors - suggested a larger deal had been struck between the two countries.

The group of ministers were briefed on the latest developments, including the attack on a security guard at Israel's embassy in Jordan.

"We need to know all the details before we decide to pray inside the compound", said Mohammed Hussein, the top Muslim cleric, or mufti, in Jerusalem.

Israel's Ambassador Danny Danon told reporters that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was working to calm the situation, but asserted that "we will do whatever is necessary to maintain security".

Over the past week, all men under 50 were prevented from entering, and anyone wanting to pray was forced to go through a metal detector. He says "a weight has been lifted from my heart" and thanked the Israeli government for bringing him home. He confirmed previous accounts that the guard fired after being attacked with a screwdriver by one of two Jordanians delivering furniture to a residential building linked to the embassy.

An acrimonious session of Jordan's parliament was cut short after lawmakers walked out in protest over the government's handling of a deadly shooting at the Israeli Embassy in the kingdom. Unfortunately, it was prompted by an unreasonable terrorist attack, and unreasonable riots in response to the entirely reasonable installation of metal detectors.

Israel has begun dismantling metal detectors it installed a week earlier at the gates of a contested Jerusalem shrine following widespread Muslim protests. The kingdom is the Muslim custodian of the shrine that is also holy to Jews.

It remains unclear if Muslim religious leaders will accept a decision by Israel's security Cabinet early on Tuesday to replace the metal detectors with "sophisticated technology", reportedly cameras that can detect hidden objects.

Israel installed metal detectors at entrances to the compound after two police officers on guard there were fatally shot on July 14.
