Israel removes Jerusalem metal detectors, Palestinians reject new measures

The move came after intensive worldwide diplomacy which warned of increasing unrest due to this move by the Israeli authorities.

Israel's security Cabinet said it would replace the metal detectors with "advanced technologies", reportedly cameras that can detect hidden objects like weapons and explosives, but said this could take up to six months. Prayers have been held near an entrance to the complex.

The metal detectors, installed almost two weeks ago after an attack at the site, have been a source of increased tension in the wider region, including widespread Palestinian protests across Jerusalem and the West Bank, as well as diplomatic tension between Israel and Jordan.

The city of Jerusalem is sacred to Muslims, Jews and Christians, and the Al-Aqsa Mosque represents the Islamic world's third-holiest site.

The legislators' walkout reflected widespread anger in Jordan over the shooting, and the unpopularity of its peace deal with Israel.

Tuesday's decision to remove the metal detector gates was an about-turn after the rightist Netanyahu, wary of being seen to capitulate to Palestinian pressure, said on Sunday the devices would stay put.

The Joint Arab List also criticized the decision to install cameras at the Temple Mount's entrance.

Sweden's Deputy U.N. Ambassador Carl Skau posted on Twitter after the meeting that Security Council members "agree on need for de-escalation, condemnation of violence and urgent dialogue to calm tensions in Jerusalem". Earlier Monday, Jordan had said all the embassy staff could leave except the security guard. "He later died of his wounds", the statement said Monday.

In a statement Tuesday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu thanked US President Donald Trump for "directing [senior adviser and son-in-law] Jared Kushner and dispatching Jason Greenblatt to help with our efforts to bring the Israeli embassy staff home quickly".

The cameras would be installed in Jerusalem's Old City where the shrine, revered by Muslims and Jews, is located. The king called on Mr Netanyahu to remove the metal detectors.

The new security measures were approved by Israel's security cabinet at a late-night meeting, as The Two-Way reported, after "the recommendations by all of the country's security services to use other kinds of technology".

The move incensed the Muslim world, amid allegations that Israel was trying to expand control over the site under the guise of security.

Israel installed the metal detectors in response to an Arab attack that killed two Israeli police guards at the Muslim-administered holy site.
