Turkey's Erdogan to seek extended state of emergency

Turkey's parliament on Monday approved extending the existing state of emergency for three more months, nearly a year after it was imposed in the wake of last July's attempted military coup.

"All of those in the state's high levels have been dismissed, but there are still hidden people", Canikli said.

On Sunday, Erdoğan inaugurated a 31,4-meter monument in Ankara honouring the 250 people killed during the coup attempt.

Turkish authorities also stripped 342 retired army personnel of their rank, Anadolu said.

In a fiery speech Saturday marking a year since the Turkish government put down a coup attempt, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed to "chop off the heads" of traitors if capital punishment were restored in the country.

Government critics, including human rights groups and some Western governments, have accused Erdogan of using the state of emergency introduced shortly after the coup to target opposition figures including activists, pro-Kurdish politicians and journalists.

Meanwhile, Turkey's main opposition party says the government is blocking a full investigation into the coup. Gulen has denied any involvement.

The National Security Council, chaired by President Recep Erdogan, proposed to the government to extend the state of emergency by three months.

"No investigations have been made into how this terror organization got to such a daring point within the state, how it was placed there to attempt a coup, and new information was covered up", Tezcan told The Associated Press on July 16.

Earlier, Hurriyet daily reported that 7,348 people including 2,303 police - were dismissed in total.

More than 50,000 people have been arrested and 110,000 public employees sacked for alleged links to Mr Gulen and other terror groups, under the state of emergency imposed on July 20 past year.
