Trump says OK after Senate Republicans delay healthcare bill voting

House Speaker Paul Ryan of Wis. meets with reporters following a GOP strategy session Tuesday

A report issued Monday by the Congressional Budget Office estimated that if the Republican bill was enacted, 22 million fewer Americans would have health care coverage over the coming decade and that some Americans would have to pay more for the same level of coverage they now possess.

Senator Mitch McConnell hoped that keeping his wretched bill to destroy the Affordable Care Act secret until the last minute would make it easier for him to railroad fellow Republicans. That's largely because the penalty for not having health insurance - the Affordable Care Act's so-called individual mandate - would be eliminated.

Top Democrat Nancy Pelosi earlier warned that "hundreds of thousands" of Americans would die if congressional Republicans pass their healthcare legislation.

The Senate bill would reduce taxes on the wealthy, as well as on insurers, drug companies, device makers and tanning salons by $700 billion over a decade, paying for it with sharp cuts to Medicaid and with reductions to the subsidies that help middle-class people buy insurance on their own.

The health care bill, however, offers plenty of other reasons for opposition.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told White House chief of staff Reince Priebus that the group's attacks were "beyond stupid", according to a Republican with knowledge of the exchange. The bill needs 51 votes to pass the Senate.

Donald Trump called the House healthcare bill that resulted in 23 million additional uninsured by 2026 "mean".

The U.S. Senate showdown over replacing the federal health care law turned into a no-show on Tuesday.

McConnell, whose party has a razor-thin majority in the 100-member Senate, told reporters that Republican leaders would work through the week to win over the 50 senators needed to pass the bill, with a vote planned in the weeks following the recess. If there is a tie, the vice president can vote to break the tie. If you add that into the bill, you would - nearly certain to lose conservatives who would not vote for it.

The seating arrangement around Trump during the meeting appeared to be strategic, with numerous undecided or "no" vote senators sitting closest to the President.

DAVIS: You know, at least five Republicans had already come out publicly and said they would not vote for essentially a procedural motion that just allows the Senate to take up the bill.

When Obamacare became law in 2010, it passed without any Republican votes. Today was certainly a setback, but I think the predominant view among Republicans is that McConnell is going to be able to deliver on this and that he has to to bolster the president. A change to Obamacare could be possible now. Moderate Republicans anxious that millions of people would lose their insurance. "And at this point there's not much give", added Sen. While removing health coverage from 20 plus million Americans, it funds an $800 billion tax cut, including retroactive payments, for millionaires. As reported by The Hill on June 27, Trump no longer seems upset if the bill is not successful.
