Three Chicago officers indicted in alleged cover-up of Laquan McDonald shooting

Chicago Police last month finalized stricter limits on when officers can use firearms and other force, the latest attempt to reform a department roiled by misconduct and criticism in the wake of McDonald's shooting. It also alleges that the officers chose not to identify or interview witnesses or preserve physical evidence, and that they deleted communications with other officers.

Walsh, 48, who was Van Dyke's partner that night, Gaffney, 43, and March, 58, were all at the scene of the shooting, Holmes told reporters.

A grand jury has indicted three Chicago police officers on felony charges, accusing them of conspiring to cover up the facts of a fatal police shooting in October 2014 of a black teenager in order to shield their fellow officer.

"The indictment makes clear that these defendants did more than merely obey an unofficial 'code of silence, '" said Patrick Brown Holmes, an attorney who is serving as special prosecutor in the investigation.

The indictment alleges that the officers understood that, if video and other evidence became public, "it would inexorably lead to a thorough criminal investigation by an independent body and likely criminal charges".

The newly indicted officers are due in court for arraignment on July 10, CBS reported. In a subsequent report, March said that McDonald ignored commands to drop the knife and swung it at Van Dyke. Their false statements included that Van Dyke had been injured by McDonald, who was swinging a knife "in an aggressive manner".

Asked about that possibility in a news conference Tuesday, Brown Holmes said a few times, "The investigation continues".

"If we want that culture (of silence) to end, and police officers want it to end, we have to know that there are consequences when officers lie", Futterman said.

The three officers' "virtually identical" police reports said dashcam footage backed up their version of events.

Comments are closed as three men have been charged. She added, "Officer Van Dyke's case is totally separate from this case". Gaffney will now be suspended without pay, as is customary for officers under felony indictment, a department spokesman said.

"Throughout this investigation, CPD has fully cooperated with prosecutors and will continue to do so", he continued.

The video showed Van Dyke shooting McDonald 16 times, sparking public outrage and leading to a probe by the U.S. Justice Department that ended with a report that documented years of systemic civil rights violations by the country's second largest police department.

McDonald's death is among a string of high-profile police-involved killings of black suspects that have stirred racial tensions and set off nationwide protests over what many believe are injustices within the justice system.
