Mitch McConnell Making Side Deals For Health Care Votes

Senate Majority Leader Mitch Mc Connell of Ky. talks with Secretary for the Majority Laura Dove as he walks to his office on Capitol Hill in Washington Monday

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky emerged with the updated plans from a lunch with other GOP senators, along with the news that the chamber's Republicans were headed to the White House for a meeting with President Donald Trump. McConnell and Senate GOP leaders hadn't discussed possible changes with members concerned about some of the bill's provisions, two senators said. The decision was described by a Republican aide and another informed person who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the closed-door decision.

"We really have no choice but to solve this situation", President Trump said Tuesday at the start of his meeting with Senate Republicans, all invited to the White House on Tuesday afternoon to discuss the way forward on health care.

Shortly after McConnell's announcement, two centrist GOP senators - Rob Portman of OH and Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia - said they oppose the current language in the bill, citing cuts to Medicaid as one reason.

Republicans are now going to regroup, hoping to bring the bill back to life after the July 4th holiday.

While Democratic opposition to the bill, as expected, is high, GOP support for the Senate GOP's plan is very soft.

Trump and other fellow Republicans have made repealing the so-called Obamacare health care reforms enacted under his predecessor a top priority.

"I think we're going to get it over the line", Trump told reporters a day after meeting with most of the Republican senators at the White House to urge them to break the impasse.

President Donald Turmp meets with GOP senators Tuesday.

John Cornyn, the No. 2 Senate Republican, said the party leadership was talking to every Republican senator who had expressed concerns or was undecided about the bill.

Walsh noted that Heller called for the repeal of Obamacare in 2012 and said the political action committee plans to allot over $1 million toward attacking the Republican senator, who is up for reelection in 2018.

The CBO and Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT) said the legislation would reduce the cumulative federal deficit over the 2017-2026 period by $321 billion, about $202 billion more than the estimated net savings for the version of H.R. 1628 that was passed by the House.

"We're optimistic we're going to get to a result that's better than the status quo", he said.

According to the New York Times, Sens. "Because that's exactly what the Senate GOP healthcare bill does: it restores Obamacare".

The bill hit a major roadblock Monday when a non-partisan analysis said it would leave an additional 22 million more Americans without insurance. The BCRA would cut Medicaid expansion, create tax credits for people buying insurance (replacing the majority of subsidies), and allow states to waive some mandatory benefits put in place by the ACA.

The CBO analysis of the Senate bill determined that premiums will drop for those who don't qualify for subsidies, but premiums will rise for individuals over the age of 50 who now qualify for subsidies. However, that 22 million number is impossible to ignore. Even among Republicans, just 17 percent strongly approved of it, while 13 percent disapproved strongly.
