Lacking votes, Senate GOP delay health care vote

Lacking votes, Senate GOP delay health care vote

Paul said he spoke with President Trump Sunday evening, but lamented over the lack of communication he has received from GOP leadership.

This news comes on the heels of the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) report released Monday that estimates that 22 million more Americans will be uninsured by the end of the next 10 years under the Senate Republican health care plan than under current law, with 15 million more uninsured persons in the next year alone.

McConnell, the six-term Kentucky senator, postponed the vote until after the Senate's Independence Day recess as more members said they would not back the bill.

"My suspicion is that any negotiation with the Democrats would include none of the reforms that we would like to make, both on the market side and the Medicaid side", McConnell told reporters yesterday.

"I have so many fundamental problems with the bill that have been confirmed by the CBO report that it's hard to see how any tinkering can address my fundamental and deep concerns", Senator Susan Collins (R-Maine), a moderate and a confirmed no vote, told reporters after meeting with her fellow Republicans on Tuesday.

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) analysis suggested some ammunition Republican leaders could use, saying the Senate bill would cut federal deficits by 202 billion dollars more over the coming decade than the version the House approved in May.

One moderate who has criticized the measure's Medicaid cuts, Sen. Capito and another moderate, Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine). "I will vote no on mtp", she said, referring to the "motion to proceed" to the bill.

Lee and other conservatives have favored a fuller repeal of Obama's statute than the Senate bill would enact.

"It's a big complicated subject", said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who downplayed GOP troubles, vowing not to give up on changes to the Obama health law.

Minutes after the report's release, three GOP senators threatened to oppose beginning debate.

Senators from states that expanded the Medicaid program - and Susan Collins, a Republican from ME - would not brook many of those changes, especially the measure to severely undermine protections for people with pre-existing medical conditions.

However, the fate of the Senate measure remains in doubt, with five GOP legislators going on record last week that they can not support the bill as written.

Nevada's Republican Sen. Dean Heller is among a half-dozen lawmakers being targeted by pro-Medicaid ads.

Trump spoke with several senators over the weekend, White House spokesman Sean Spicer said Monday, including Paul, Sens. He celebrated the House bill then said it was mean. Paul also noted that young people are going to be charged more due to increased regulations on what the policies will be required to cover.

The Senate bill would reduce taxes on the wealthy, as well as on insurers, drug companies, device makers and tanning salons by $700 billion over a decade, paying for it with sharp cuts to Medicaid and with reductions to the subsidies that help middle-class people buy insurance on their own.
