Firefighters battle wildfires in Arizona, Utah, California

Western wildfires still raging

Smoke from a wildfire rises behind a group of condos near the Giant Steps Lodge on Tuesday, June 27, 2017, in Brian Head, Utah.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The nation's largest wildfire has forced more than 1,500 people from their homes and cabins in a southern Utah mountain area home to a ski town and popular fishing lake. What they are saying "Things change day-to-day".

Yavapai County Emergency Management Coordinator Denny Foulk said there are about 2,000 residents in the area affected by the fire and 3,000 structures in the evacuated area were at risk but officials were not immediately sure how many are homes.

In Utah, firefighters hope Wednesday to douse areas with intense blazes at the Utah fire's southern end so residents can return to homes in the town of Brian Head. He believes the Trump administration will provide a more receptive audience for his plea.

The blaze is one of several in the West. Crews in California were making gains against two new fires that spread quickly, and firefighters in Idaho battled five lightning-sparked wildfires burning in grass and brush.

More than 500 firefighters braced for windy conditions Tuesday as they continued to battle the northern Arizona wildfire that has burned 6.8 square miles (17.6 sq. kilometers) so far. Homes there have been evacuated since June 17 since authorities said the fire was started by someone using a torch tool to burn weeds on private land. The Brian Head Fire is now the largest wildfire burning in the U.S.

"We thank the many courageous men and women who have stepped up and responded to wildfires around Arizona", Ducey said.

Another stubborn wildfire is burning in southern Utah.

"It's shameful that Rep. Noel has chosen to exploit the fire and mislead the public by saying that conservationists are to blame for this event", Bloch said.

A large fire that began with a lightning strike on June 7 has burned more almost 60 square miles.

Burnout areas near Panguitch Lake, Utah during a wildfire tour by Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox, in southern Utah.

Finney said logging companies generally can't make money in operations at high elevations because the trees don't grow back quickly enough and logistics are hard.

Parts of two state highways are closed because of the fire. But Noel says the lawsuit in the early 1990s delayed a Forest Service plan to get rid of an emerging cluster of bark beetles before it spread.

A fire weather watch is also in effect Wednesday afternoon through evening.

"That's just logging industry propaganda", Hanson said. A wildfire surging out of control on California's Central Coast has forced around 250 people to evacuate from their homes.

Over 600 firefighters are battling the blaze that has already burned over 28 square miles (73 square kilometers). Jackson said his home is all he has and he has to protect it. Besides the evacuation of 1,500 people in the area, 13 homes have been destroyed and as of Tuesday, containment is at only 10 percent.

Residents of Mayer say they struggled to leave behind their homes.
