Current version of Senate health care bill is dead

In an analysis of the Senate draft, the CBO said the number of Americans who would be uninsured by 2026 under the Senate bill would be 49 million.

However, the Senate bill, if becoming law, would decrease federal deficits by a total of 321 billion US dollars over a decade. At the same time, it would phase out the Affordable Care Act's Medicaid expansion, while offering less generous subsidies to those who purchase health insurance on the individual market. That could be a particular concern to Nevada Senator Dean Heller, who faces perhaps the toughest 2018 re-election race of any Senate Republican and who has said he can't support a health-care package that cuts Medicaid and takes coverage from "tens of millions of Americans and tens of thousands of Nevadans".

McConnell can only lose two votes for the bill to pass.

"The Senate bill, unveiled today, is not a health care bill", he wrote in a Facebook post Thursday.

McConnell has said he wants a final vote on the bill Friday, before a brief recess for lawmakers for the July 4 Independence Day holiday, but some in the party have balked at the short timeline.

McConnell previously said he would not hold a vote on the Senate bill until it had a CBO score.

The moderates are afraid how the new law would hurt their constituents back home, while the conservatives say the bill leaves too much of the Obama law intact. In a tweet, Collins said she wants to work with Republicans and Democrats to "fix the flaws" in Obamacare, but the "Senate bill won't do it".

Republicans released an updated version of their plan to repeal and replace Obamacare Monday afternoon.

Trump only can afford two Republican "no" votes if his health care plan has any chance of surviving.

The 22 million additional people without coverage under the Senate proposal is slightly better than the 23 million who'd be left without insurance under the measure the House approved last month, the budget office has estimated.

Additionally, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops announced in a statement shared to Twitter that the Senate bill was "unacceptable". Once again, older people will see the most significant spikes in costs.

The GOP would also repeal taxes that Obamacare levied on insurers, drug makers and others. It would also make major changes to Medicaid, the federal health care program for the poor and disabled.

The individual market would be stable in most areas of the country under the Senate plan, the CBO projected.

A person making $26,500 would pay more for coverage under the Senate law at ages 21, 40 and 64.

This forecast comes as Senate Republican leaders press for a vote on the bill later this week, and it has already led one Republican senator to firmly oppose the bill.

The nation's wealthiest Americans would get a hefty tax cut from the Senate health care bill. She talked with Marketplace host Kai Ryssdal about the latest analysis from the CBO.

"It's hard for me to see the bill passing this week", Collins said.

Health insurance companies have expressed concern about the bill's plan to cut Medicaid and the impact on state governments as well as the prospect of losing Obamacare's mandate on individuals to buy insurance without creating alternative incentives for people to stay in their plans.
