China frees 3 activists who probed Ivanka Trump supplier

Chinese authorities on Wednesday released three activists who were detained after investigating labor conditions at a factory that made shoes for Ivanka Trump's brand.

They had been looking into labor violations for China Labor Watch, a NY nonprofit that has been investigating Ivanka Trump's Chinese suppliers for more than a year.

Hua and his colleagues at the labour group were preparing to publish a report alleging low pay, excessive overtime, crude verbal abuse and possible misuse of student labour at Huajian Group factories. They had been detained for about a month for allegedly using bugging and eavesdropping devices while collecting information about a plant owned by shoemaker Huajian Group in the southeast province of Jiangxi.

The company said it operates lawfully and that China Labor Watch "invented so-called "facts" by illegal means of buying undercover work, which has already affected the enterprise's normal business seriously and affected the survival and employment of tens of thousands of staff". "China Labor Watch hopes that the court will provide the investigators with a fair trial", the group said in a statement.

China Labor Watch said the company forced workers to sign fake pay stubs with inflated salary numbers and threatened to fire workers if they didn't fill in questionnaires about working conditions with pre-approved answers.

But Ms. Trump did call in a speech at the State Department on Tuesday for strong action against countries where human trafficking occurs, in conjunction with the release of a United States government report that labeled China as one such country.

Despite her father's mantra of "Buy American", First Daughter Ivanka Trump outsources the manufacturing of most of her clothing line to contractors in China. I'm happy to be out. Marc Fisher, which produces shoes for Ivanka Trump and other brands, has said it is looking into the allegations. Her brand told The Hill that it had not used the factory in question in months.

The Ivanka Trump said it had no comment. The three were detained by police in late May.
