Alabama military post on lockdown amid reports of "possible active shooter"

Authorities Investigate Report of Active Shooter at Alabama Military Installation

Two 911 calls about a weapon and gunshots Tuesday morning led to a two-hour lockdown and closing of gates at Redstone Arsenal, but authorities said there was no evidence shots were fired.

A spokesman for Redstone Arsenal told Huntsville, Alabama, NBC affiliate WAFF-TV that there was possibly an active shooting and was not a drill.

About two hours later, Redstone Arsenal spokesman Christopher Colster told reporters that he had heard of no casualties or arrests.

"Possible active shooter on the Arsenal", Redstone Arsenal's official Twitter account stated late Tuesday morning. "Honestly, if we have to overreact, I would rather overreact than underreact".

Redstone said Tuesday afternoon that the "Sparkman complex and intersections in and around Martin road remain in a lock down status" while "the remainder of the installation is open for normal traffic".

There's no immediate word from base officials about whether the threat is of an actual shooter or merely part of a scheduled exercise.

Huntsville Police officers block an entrance to Redstone Arsenal, Tuesday, June 27, 2017 in Huntsville, Ala. "... this is an initial report, 911 has been called, more to follow".

'This exercise will also encompass training at multiple facilities on USAG-R but primarily at the Sparkman Center, USATA buildings and AMRDEC.

Gov. Kay Ivey tweeted that her office was being updated.

David Kumbroch with WHNT tweeted Huntsville Hospital was on heightened alert because of this report, but they've not received any patients. Robert Aderholt and Mo Brooks were monitoring the situation and Ivy said she would "pray for a peaceful and quick resolution", Fox News reported.

In addition to hosting Army Aviation and Missile Command, which tests and develops missile programs, the almost 38,000 acre post hosts about 70 other organizations, including the Army's Material Command, FBI and ATF agents, Air Force units and NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center.

NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, which oversees rocket propulsion operations, also is located at Redstone.
