ConfederationsCup: Cameroon Crash Out As Germany, Chile Progress To Semis

The Australians took the lead in the 42nd minute when James Troisi delicately chipped the ball in after a pass from Robbie Kruse, and then went in pursuit of a second goal that could have seen them qualify at Chile's expense.

Germany have won two of their three previous meetings with Cameroon and there was a 2-2 draw when the teams last met in a pre-World Cup friendly in 2014.

Kerem Demirbay marked his full global debut with a brilliant goal and Timo Werner hit a brace as Germany booked their place in the Confederations Cup semi-finals with a 3-1 win against 10-man Cameroon on Sunday, but the game was marred by more Video Assistant Replay (VAR) confusion.

Colombian referee Wilmar Roldan called the decision back to the VAR (Video Assistance Referee) before dismissing Mabouka, although he had to check twice after originally dismissing the wrong player.

Neither were in evidence Sunday in Sochi as Cameroon defender Ernest Mabouka eventually left the field around three minutes after his boot connected with Emre Can of Germany. There were flickers of a comeback by the African champions when Vincent Aboubakar's header slipped through Marc-Andre Ter Stegen's raised hands.

But three minutes into the second period, Germany hit the front as some wonderful build-up play was rewarded by a first global goal for Demirbay.

The victory means that Joachim Low's side will stay in Sochi for their semi-final against Mexico on 29 June.

The World Cup winners will face a rejuvenated Mexican squad on Thursday, while two-time Copa America champions Chile will battle Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal on Wednesday.

Yet even if Cameroon can not beat Germany, Broos insists that the team has still come a long way in a short space of time.

"Some of my players have no experience and were nervous because one mistake could have eliminated us", Loew said through a translator. We've got a big challenge ahead of us.

Cameroon goalkeeper Fabrice Ondoa prevented Germany from extending its lead by blocking Kimmich's shot from a tight angle.

The blunder by Ter Stegen for Cameroon's goal should concern Loew.

He said: "I've said all along we'll qualify for the World Cup".

Australia coach Ange Postecoglou regretted missed opportunities as they bow out of the Confed Cup after two draws and a defeat.

However, substitute Martin Rodriguez's first worldwide goal spared Chile's blushes and, as expected, they followed Germany out of Group B and through to the next round. The striker whose goals propelled Leipzig to a surprise second-place finish in the Bundesliga turned a cutback from Benjamin Henrichs into the net. "It was not intentional", Loew said through a translator at the post-match news conference.

Cahill rolled back the years to cause issues for the Chilean side, and the Aussies appeared the much better unit as they pressed. "A year ago we didn't even have a team".
