Sebastian Vettel 'a bit unfortunate' with opening lap contact

Vettel in the end came close, though not enough ultimately to take pole and second was the order for the day. The two continued to battle it out this week as Red Bull held on for another podium finish in third. Second was always the best that the Finn could hope for on a weekend where he was never quite able to match Hamilton. "I am older, the crowd was actually with me as opposed to my first year when no-one knew me".

"I don't think in the five years at this team, they have pulled together so well, really work towards the same cause, and to understand the vehicle". The race was a damage limitation exercise for the Ferrari driver but, given the circumstances, Vettel will be satisfied that he finished just one place short of a podium position and collected points which could prove vital come the end of the season. Then we split the strategy with Lewis.

Speaking on his good track record in Canada, a buoyant Hamilton said, "I was really able to enjoy the moment and the vehicle and the crowd, the weather was fantastic, even if it was a bit gusty and you still had to concentrate -- it was a challenge and it was well-managed". However, the Red Bull suffered an electrical failure on lap 11, which promoted Bottas to the second position. Prior to Montreal the Ferrari driver had finished either first or second in every Grand Prix in 2017.

Vettel climbed back through the field up to sixth and began to apply pressure to the battling Force Indias of Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon, who were trying to hunt down Ricciardo in third.

"I couldn't rest the whole race". It was pressure, pressure, and I couldn't afford to make a mistake.

"I had pressure, so I couldn't afford to do any mistakes and it was getting quite hot so concentration was being tested".

Hamilton made the most of the re-start and resisted another Verstappen attack before Vettel, his front wing clearly damaged, pitted for repairs. "I didn't get one".

"It was still a challenge but it was like the other races I've had here where I've qualified in the lead and it's been so well-managed". "Here's what you could get" basically. Eventually we did, but yeah, as I said, I wanted that podium and didn't get it, so we take fourth.

Vettel was not the only driver to be negatively affected by the start. Carlos Sainz moved over into the path of Romain Grosjean and the contact sent the Toro Rosso flying into Turn Three backwards, collecting Williams' Felipe Massa on the way through. Perez and Ocon were fifth and sixth to cross the finish line.

The mood was not almost as upbeat when Mercedes arrived in Montreal on the back of a miserable Monaco where triple world champion Hamilton qualified 13th and finished seventh, with Bottas fourth.

His third win of 2017, and 56th victory of his career, cut his deficit from 25 to 12 points from Vettel, as the German recovered from his early misdemeanours to finish in fourth spot.
