Trump slams Ossoff, praises Handel in tweets

Congressional Baseball Game breaks records for fundraising ticket sales

Republicans are favored to hold a fourth seat up Tuesday in SC, while Democrats already held their lone open seat in a California special election.

All eyes are on District 6 today in the runoff election between Karen Handel and Jon Ossoff. It would also give progressives who pumped $23 million into Ossoff's campaign something to celebrate.

That all means there are many more people who typically vote Republican in the district than Democrats.

Many see the Georgia race as a potential preview of the 2018 midterm elections.

The person elected will replace Tom Price, President Donald Trump's health secretary.

Despite there being zero mention of him at either candidate's final rallies, Trump remains a unique motivator for the base in both parties, making him a subtle but inescapable presence as the campaigns work to get their supporters to the polls.

But even with all that good news for Democrats, this is still problematic.

The importance of the race has reportedly helped Democrat John Ossoff compete in a typically Republican stronghold. What they tend to have in common: Relatively highly educated, wealthy and diverse populations, plus people who - like thousands in Ossoff's district - voted for Mitt Romney in 2012 and then backed Hillary Clinton in 2016. Ossoff, you see, has gotten a He reached one million contributions before Barack Obama or Bernie Sanders did - and those were national races, not a local one writ large. But Handel said that's not what she's hearing.

He tweeted on Monday, June 19, "Karen Handel's opponent in #GA06 can't even vote in the district he wants to represent because he doesn't even live there!" It could also show House incumbents that they can separate themselves from Trump effectively on the campaign trail, and stave off a potential wave of retirements.

Trump said Ossoff doesn't live in the 6th District. She'll have even helped write the playbook, after relentlessly working to tie Ossoff to Nancy Pelosi and hitting him on national security.

Handel said she feels positive about her chances, and she would not engage in a conversation on the theory that if she loses, it would be because voters don't like Trump. "If you look back on this and things are that tight, wouldn't you say to yourself just get an apartment in the district?" It just hasn't flowed through her campaign, which has raised $5 million thanks in part to three fundraisers headlined by Trump, Vice President Mike Pence and House Speaker Paul Ryan. Greg Williams, a local GOP county chair and Handel volunteer told ABC he thought some "alt-left supporters" were doing "damage to the democratic brand".

Democrats and liberal activists nationally hope to show they can flip the 24 GOP-held seats they would need to reclaim a House majority next November.

This election will be the most expensive House race ever, with CBS News reporting that spending could reach $50 million.

And for all the talk about Handel running from her party's leadership, she campaigned with two Cabinet secretaries, a governor, and the No. 2 House Republican in the closing days of the campaign.

A little-known political action committee unveiled a last-minute ad trying to link Ossoff to the shooting of a Republican House leader and others at a GOP congressional baseball team practice last week outside Washington. Low voter turnout is a big issue.
