McCain: Americans 'stupid' to still want to travel to NKorea

The Latest McCain Travelers to N Korea should sign waiver

John McCain said Tuesday that Americans who are "stupid" enough to still want to travel to North Korea should be required to sign a waiver absolving the USA government of any blame should they be harmed while there.

It may never be known, but there are some clues - as well as widespread speculation.

(AP Photo/John Minchillo). Fred Warmbier, father of Otto Warmbier, a University of Virginia undergraduate student who was imprisoned in North Korea in March 2016, speaks during a news conference, Thursday, June 15, 2017, at Wyoming High School in Cinci.

The University of Virginia student was accused of trying to steal a propaganda banner while visiting with a tour group and was convicted of subversion.

North Korean diplomats at the United Nations had urgently requested a face-to-face meeting with US officials in NY.

They said that given his young age, Warmbier's severe brain injury was most likely caused by cardiopulmonary arrest cutting the blood supply to the brain. Within weeks, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison and hard labor.

In their statement Monday, Warmbier's family said they believed the young man had found a peace of sorts after being flown home.

Others believe it is unlikely that North Korea intentionally harmed Warmbier because he was valuable as a political pawn.

Or maybe North Korea concealed his medical condition for so long in the hopes that he'd recover.

Wambier's parents did not cite a specific cause of death but blamed "awful, torturous mistreatment" by North Korea. Trump had personally lobbied Chinese President Xi Jinping to take stronger action on Chinese banks and other entities that do business with North Korea during a summit in Florida in April. "You've got to capitalize on this, and influence their internal debates to get them to recognize and acknowledge what happened".

Outrage in the United States means that more pressure, not dialogue, is the more likely course.

A coroner hasn't reached a conclusion about the cause of death for a 22-year-old American college student who died in Cincinnati less than a week after he was released from North Korea in a coma.

Moon Jae-in pushed off any talk of a pre-emptive strike against North Korea. He was leaving North Korea on January 2, 2016, when he was detained at the airport.

"The bad torturous mistreatment our son received at the hands of the North Koreans ensured that no other outcome was possible", the family said in a statement announcing Warmbier's death. Still, opponents will question whether such negotiations may give the North more time to expand its nuclear weapons program.

Warmbier's death came just days after he was released by the North Korean government and returned home while suffering from extensive brain damage, according to the American doctors who treated him.

He called North Korea a "brutal regime".

Trump also had opened the door for potential direct talks with Kim, saying in an interview two months ago that he'd be "honored" to meet the North Korean leader under the right circumstances. The country may not worry about much of anything externally, even the death of a young tourist, until it reaches its goal of building a nuclear ICBM that can ease what it sees as decades of US and South Korean hostility.
