Blimp goes down at US Open golf tournament in Wisconsin

A blimp advertising PenFed Credit Union burst into flames and crashed Thursday near the U.S. Open golf tournament at Erin Hills, Wisconsin.

Maynard says he is "not 100 percent" on the condition of the pilot. It says the office had been in touch with the Federal Aviation Administration before the crash and "determined the aircraft was lawfully operating at the proper altitude".

Emergency crews responded to a blimp crash in Erin, Wisconsin Thursday, just east of where the U.S. Open is being held.

"First responders were quick to arrive at the scene and the pilot is now being treated for unknown injuries", a statement said.

Shockingly, that would be Spieth's final birdie of the day in one of the worst U.S. Open rounds of his career, as he reeled off a string of 10 straight pars, While Spieth played well off the tee early on, the two-time major victor missed a number of short putts to prevent him from moving further up the leaderboard.

Teeing off later on the day were Rory McIlroy, who is returning from injury, and Shane Lowry, both of whom remain out on course at Erin Hills.

However, there are reports that the front of the blimp was deflated before it caught fire.

Paramedics were seen tending to the injured pilot before they wheeled the man into a waiting helicopter marked "Flight For Life". The sheriff's office said the blimp may have experienced mechanical problems prior to the crash.

"He said 'The blimp is not looking good.' I guess it was nose down".

Spectators posted photos and videos online which appeared to show the blimp falling from the sky and crashing in woodland near the course.

According to the USGA, which runs the event, the blimp was unaffiliated with the tournament or with Fox Sports, which is broadcasting the event.

A local TV channel interviewed a witness named Adam Johnson on Twitter who supported what the other witness said, the Telegraph reported. "There is smoke rising from the site".

Twenty-eight years have passed since the last successful U.S. Open defence, courtesy of Curtis Strange in 1989, and Dustin Johnson has much work to do if he is to buck that trend.

Red numbers are good for golfers. The top prize is $12 million.
