England beats Venezuela 1-0 to win U20 World Cup

"After the semi-final, I said there couldn't be a prouder Englishman anywhere in the world... but I've topped that".

Paul Simpson (front row, second from left) celebrates with England's U20 side after their World Cup success.

Whether this victory will mean anything for the future of English football is unclear. "This is what we have worked so hard for".

England's Dominic Calvert-Lewin (L) celebrates with teammates after scoring a goal against Venezuela in the Federation Internationale de Football Association U-20 World Cup final at Suwon World Cup Stadium in Suwon, some 45 kilometers south of Seoul, on June 11, 2017.

"We set goals at the beginning of the tournament and previous year, as soon as we had qualified, which seems like a long time ago, we wanted to come here and win it". Dominic Solanke may have won the Golden Ball at the World Cup but he had already agreed to join Liverpool in July having found his path into the Chelsea side blocked. "I probably should have scored from the first opportunity, but I just carried on", he explained.

"It's been wonderful to be here in Korea, everybody has been so friendly so to top it off with a win, it's been unbelievable and I couldn't have asked for anything more". He will hope for more chances with parent club Newcastle, who will of course play in the Premier League next season. Calvert-Lewin almost made it 2-0 moments later, but Farinez raced out to block him after the impressive Lookman had played him through on goal. "I have had a taste of it last season with Everton and I want to show I am capable of playing regularly".

Lewis Cook, the Bournemouth midfielder who captained England to victory at the tournament, said: "It is the best day of my life so far".

Venezuela tested England goalkeeper Freddie Woodman with Yangel Herrera's header in the 50th. They clapped after Wuilker Farinez, the goalkeeper, took a shot rather than protecting the net in a last minute attempt to tie the game, but there was a clear gap in the two team's skill levels.

We've got some real top-quality coaches back at home who have supported us all the way, as have the teams below us and the senior team above us too. However, for now, at least England can finally say that they are World Champions at some level for the first time in over 50 years.

"It's an incredible feeling and I don't think it will ever go away".

After Calvert-Lewin's goal on 35 minutes, Cook's side withstood a ferocious second-half onslaught in Suwon, South Korea, with goalkeeper Woodman dramatically saving Adalberto Penaranda spot-kick 16 minutes from the end. "That was quite unusual but I must say they were a great bunch of lads".

His biggest moment of brilliance was saved for the second half of the decisive match.

"I have to admit, Billy [McNeill] had to sell it to us", Simpson told club historian Bartley Ramsay when reflecting on his move to Ballybofey in an interview for the Finn Harps programme in 2004.
