Scottish independence dealt a blow after nationalists suffer losses

Ian Blackford the new SNP Westminster leader

He echoed Scotland's First Minister and SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon, who in the wake of the election result said the Tories must abandon a "reckless" pursuit of a hard Brexit.

"The Tories' hard Brexit plan has been rejected and we can not allow the Brexit negotiations to become hostage to the inability of either the Tories or Labour to command a clear majority".

Her party won 35 seats in last week's General Election, down 21 on the 56 MPs it returned in 2015.

"It is incumbent on us to listen to other parties in Parliament, and people outside it, about the best way forward".

Brexit, a late surge in support for UK Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and tactical voting were some of the other factors Ms Sturgeon cited as having contributed to the result.

"We had a very clear message in this campaign and there wouldn't have been so many SNP losses tonight if Nicola Sturgeon hadn't tried to force through an unwanted second independence referendum in March", she said.

She added: "The damage the Tories have done to the stability and the reputation of the United Kingdom can not be overstated".

Ms Sturgeon appealed for MPs of all parties to "join together to keep the United Kingdom and Scotland in the European single market".

Ms Sturgeon said: "Now that the Queen's Speech has been postponed, questions have been raised about what has been cooked up behind closed doors and is it possible for this Prime Minister - notwithstanding what she said on Friday - to put together a Government that is functional and sustainable".

"This morning, we have heard SNP figures acknowledge that the referendum demands were behind its bad result".

"Of course we'll listen and reflect, it's too premature to say what we'll do next around that". "I'm afraid that's not enough".

"It is an opportunity, perhaps - I know the arithmetic, I am not blind to the hurdles - but it perhaps means an opportunity for a progressive alternative to a Tory/DUP government".

Ms Dugdale said of Ms Sturgeon: "The one thing I would ask her to do is to shelve her plans for a second independence referendum". If they don't want independence they are unlikely to want a referendum on independence.

She said the PM's decision to call a snap poll had backfired.

He said: "I just did not want Indy Ref 2 at all and also I was really impressed with Ruth Davidson, the Scottish Tory leader".

Mr Rennie said a vote should be held in Holyrood to "sist, delay and stop" another referendum in the current parliamentary term.
