Missouri lawmakers start session on abortion

Gov. Eric Greitens speaks with reporters after touring Our Lady's Inn a St. Louis pregnancy center for women experiencing homelessness

Without the new law, travelers hoping to board planes beginning January 22 would otherwise have to use passports.

Last week, Greitens asked the General Assembly to reconsider anti-abortion measures they failed to pass before their regular session ended May 12.

Greitens also wants lawmakers to undo a St. Louis ordinance that bans discrimination in the workplace and in housing based on pregnancies, abortions and other "reproductive health decisions".

The anti-abortion proposals come at a time when the Planned Parenthood clinic in Columbia is preparing to resume offering abortions after stopping services in December 2015. Onder said he plans to sponsor a Senate bill.

In a session Monday, representatives quickly introduced 14 abortion-related bills.

Some lawmakers resented being called back. She says there already are strict standards on abortion and a special session is unneeded.

Under the new law, approved by the House and Senate in the waning days of the spring legislative session, data retained from Missourians' personal documents will be housed in a secure facility not connected to the commercial internet - to avoid hacking - and criminal penalties await anyone who misuses the information. "It's going to cost the taxpayers several hundred dollars, probably, or at least a couple hundred thousand dollars, to bring us back into session".

"Send it to a vote of the people and let them decide if they want to spend their tax dollars on making us a full-time legislature", Holsman said.

Sen. Ryan Silvey, R-Kansas City, said nothing's wrong with the governor wanting additional abortion restrictions, but every abortion bill the state passes ends up the subject of a court battle.

Governor Greitens, whose party has majorities in both houses of the Legislature, has told lawmakers that he's "cancelling their summer vacations". Republican Sen. Rob Schaaf criticized the governor for calling the last special session - an effort to authorize discounted electricity rates for a steel-works facility and aluminum smelter that are considering opening near the southeastern Missouri town of New Madrid - but then waiting to sign the bill after lawmakers passed it.

Sachs actually struck down just the two restrictions and was careful to leave in place Missouri regulations that he said legitimately further the health and safety of abortion patients.
