New York Times sources say Uber discussing leave for CEO

Huffington, who has called CEO Travis Kalanick a "close friend", joined Uber's board of directors as its only female member in 2016.

Even if there is a desire among some of Uber's rank and file for leadership change, it's unlikely Kalanick would vacate the CEO role unless he wants to.

Kalanick, 40, has been spending time with his father in the Los Angeles area, where the board will meet, the Journal reported. It has hired the law firm of former Attorney General Eric Holder to recommend changes.

When Uber employees learned that the company had fired more than 20 of their colleagues as part of a harassment inquiry, it fell to an external lawyer and the head of human resources to present the far-reaching findings.

It is possible that Mr Kalanick could take time off from Uber and then return to a role with less authority, or remain as chief executive but face more scrutiny, Reuters reported.

Uber, which is now valued at an estimated $69.8 billion, is feeling backlash as investors' confidence in the company has become shaken by the months of scandals.

But Kalanick has acknowledged his management style needs improvement.

In December 2014, a 26-year-old Delhi woman was raped by Uber driver Shiv Kumar Yadav.

Holder's investigation was kickstarted by a blog post from former engineer Susan Fowler, who detailed extended instances of sexual harassment within the company and poor responses from management.

At a staff meeting that day, employees were notified that more than 200 harassment and discrimination claims had been investigated in a separate, parallel investigation by law firm Perkins Coie.

Congress is considering an investigation into Uber's tracking practices following complaints from consumer groups. Kalanick, who is also the founder of the company, emailed his pledge to Uber employees after video surfaced showing him arguing with an Uber driver who had just given his boss a ride.

"I would say that the leadership team needs to catch up with the growth in the organisation", Frei said.

The board meeting comes fresh on personal tragedy in Kalanick's life.

Uber Technologies' chief business officer, Emil Michael, may leave the company within days, NBC News reported, citing a source. In March, Uber's president, Jeff Jones, resigned after less than a year on the job. In the lead up to the Holder report, the company was seeking a new COO to serve as Kalanick's business partner.

Recently, to help fix the company's brand image, the company has hired Bozoma Saint John, Apple' s former Head of Global Consumer Marketing.
