Islamic State claims Philippines casino attack that killed 37 people

Philippines Attack

Philippines was reportedly told by local police that two more bodies were found in the hotel, but whether they were employees or hotel guests was not mentioned.

Thick smoke from fires set by the suspect delayed a search of the building, but officers later discovered them during clearing operations, National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) Director Oscar Albayalde said.

"Islamic State fighters carried out the Manila attack in the Philippines", the news agency said.

At least 35 people were killed in a shooting at Resorts World Manila in what officials are calling a botched robbery. "About 100 Christians were killed or wounded", it said. However, the militant group didn't release names or pictures of the "soldiers" who carried out that attack, which it usually does.

Police believe Carlos, who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, acted alone.

"We can not attribute this to terrorism", Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Director-General Ronald dela Rosa said Thursday evening.

Philippine authorities have ruled out terrorism as the motive for the attack, the reports said.

The details of how the attacker managed to smuggle gasoline and assault rifle into the studio are not clear, but it appears that he did not fire at people, the police chief added. Dela Rosa said the man had covered himself with a blanket, doused it with gasoline and set it on fire.

The Metropolitan Manila police chief previously said 36 bodies were found inside the building by firefighters and all died from smoke inhalation.

Police were examining his auto, which he left in a complex parking garage, authorities said.

He had stuffed chips totalling 113 million pesos ($2 million) in a backpack, but it was later recovered by police.

The attack sent hundreds of people fleeing through the complex and into the night.

Dozens of people died after a gunman whom police described as a robber fired shots and set fires at a casino resort complex in the Philippines.

Police are searching the suspect's auto, parked on the second floor. "We urge USA citizens in Manila to contact family members and loved ones to notify them that you are safe". "We were able to save many of them", he said.

He said the woman was not moving afterwards, but he did not know what happened to her.

Resorts World Manila had been placed on lockdown early Friday morning following reports of gunfire.

US President Donald Trump Thursday expressed sadness and sympathy for victims of what he labelled a "terrorist attack". The SITE Intel Group, which monitors jihadi activity worldwide, revealed that an ISIS operative in the Philippines had said that the group was responsible for the attack.

All this on a week that has seen the Philippine military battle ISIL-aligned militants in the country's south.
