Trump won't say if Comey conversations were taped

"And certainly we are there to protect", Trump added, saying this is why the USA is "paying the kind of money necessary to have that force".

He also seized on Comey's revelation that he had directed a friend to release contents of memos he'd written documenting his conversations with the president to a reporter. It doesn't make sense.

"And there would be nothing wrong if I did say it, according to everybody that I read today".

Trump has claimed "total vindication" over the hearing's revelations, all while ripping the "false statements and lies" that surround the ongoing investigations on Russian Federation. A person close to Trump's legal team has said a complaint would be filed with the Justice Department.

Comey testified in front of the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee Thursday.

"His goal is to manipulate media, manipulate the press ..."

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Donald Trump says he's willing to testify under oath about his conversations with the man he fired as Federal Bureau of Investigation director.

Collins, a member of the Senate intelligence committee, which is investigating Russia's interference in the 2016 election, said Comey's motivation "may have been a good one". It was a stunning accusation, suggesting that the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director had lied to Congress, while under oath.

The Russia investigations have consumed the White House and distracted the president and lawmakers from his governing agenda. USA intelligence agencies have said Russian Federation stole private emails and other documents from Democrats and released them publicly previous year to embarrass Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and aid Trump.

President Donald Trump speaks during a news conference with Romanian President Klaus Werner Iohannis in the Rose Garden at the White House, Friday, June 9, 2017, in Washington. He said Trump told him he had "hope" that the then-director would "let Flynn go", and that he took the suggestion as a "direction".

In his testimony, Comey recalled that during a private White House dinner on January 27, the president asked him for "loyalty" and to lay off his former top aide Flynn - who is under investigation over his Russian Federation ties - imploring Comey to "let this go".

Comey delivered scathing testimony a day earlier in a highly anticipated Senate hearing, saying Trump sought to derail a probe into onetime national security adviser Michael Flynn - at best, a political miscalculation, and at worst a criminal obstruction of justice.

Trump agreed Wednesday not to directly engage on Comey, and by the time the ousted Federal Bureau of Investigation director took the witness stand, tweeting "was not something he was considering", one senior White House official said.

Detailing one-on-one talks with a sitting president - which under normal circumstances are private - Comey said he took painstaking notes for fear Trump might "lie" about the unusual encounters.

In his first congressional appearance since being abruptly fired by Trump last month, Comey detailed months of distrust of the president and bluntly asserted that Trump had fired him to interfere with the probe of Russia's ties to the Trump campaign.
