Trump calls Comey a liar

Sessions has denied any wrongdoing, saying his two meetings with the Russian diplomat - first during an event at the Republican National Convention last July and again at his Senate office in September - were routine given his responsibilities on Capitol Hill.

If that seems familiar, it should.

"The president is not facing a particularly compelling case of obstruction for prosecution at this time", said Jonathan Turley, a professor at the George Washington University School of Law.

On Friday an angry Trump said Comey "lied" and that he was "100 percent" prepared to be interviewed by Mueller in any probe.

Here's how this works in the case of Comey.

Asked by a reporter if he had told Comey to drop the investigations into former national security adviser Flynn, Trump said, "I didn't say that".

"Perhaps Comey thought he might exonerate himself, but I believe it did the opposite", Ortel said". Trump tweeted on May 12.

"Lordy, I hope there are tapes", Comey said during his testimony Thursday.

But Comey also claims to have contemporaneous notes documenting the conversation, which he has provided to special counsel Robert Mueller - notes that shift the balance in Comey's favour.

In his written testimony Comey noted that in a private conversation Trump told him that the Russian Federation investigation was "a cloud" that was thwarting his ability to act on behalf of the country.

It is not clear whether Trump recorded the conversations or was just bluffing.

Furthermore, it appears that Comey has found himself in the very same trap he purportedly tried to set for Donald Trump.

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: No collusion, no obstruction.

Trump demurred when asked whether tapes of his talks with Comey actually exist. And now the harshest irony is that, as Comey intimated Thursday, it may no longer be a myth that Trump is being personally investigated.

"I found him to be credible, candid and thorough", Collins said of Comey on MSNBC's "Morning Joe".

Former FBI director James Comey is sworn in during a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on Thursday.

That's a significant statement for Trump to make, given that Comey was testifying under oath. Why would he dismiss the attorney general and his son-in-law Jared Kushner if he didn't know he was about to say something significant and potentially inappropriate? Trump is accusing Comey of a crime.

"In the days to come", Comey friend Ben Wittes wrote on his Lawfare blog, "we're going to see a full-court press against Comey; indeed it is already well under way".

"He said those things under oath", Karl said. So I guess he's saying Trump didn't realize NY citizens holding public office were not exempt from the law.

As for the tapes, Trump didn't get very specific, although he did somewhat cryptically remark that he'd address the issue "maybe sometime in the very near future".

The importance of Trump's unwavering assertion that he would tell the special counsel the same thing under oath is important. Republican Senator Jim Risch of Idaho argued during Comey's testimony that there is no legal basis to charge Trump for the comments Comey accused him of making.

Comey's testimony underscored the discord that had soured their relationship. But no sensible person can deny that Trump - with his obsessive tweeting and aphasic outbursts - has done nearly everything he can to make that cloud thicker and darker than necessary. To that extent, at least, the truth mattered to him, if only because he knew it mattered to others.

The fresh hits to Trump's credibility can only further hobble the White House's economic agenda.

Pundits and legal experts have been divided on whether Trump's actions rose to the level of obstruction of justice, a potentially impeachable offense, while Comey said that decision was now in the hands of Mueller, who is also a former Federal Bureau of Investigation director. (That same day, Pirro attended a baby shower in NY for Lara Trump, who is married to Eric Trump.) After the interview aired late Saturday night, Pirro tweeted: "Such a great interview!"

Trump can lie with literal impunity at this point and has a motive to do so.
