Tiger Woods Gets Arrested for DUI, Claims Alcohol Wasn't Involved

According to the latest police reports, Woods had fallen asleep at the wheel prior to his arrest.

Police in Jupiter, the oceanside Florida city where Woods lives, said he exhibited "extremely slow and slurred speech" after they awakened him when they found him sitting in his stopped vehicle in the right lane of a roadway with the motor running.

His Jupiter Island estate, which he purchased for $54.5 million in 2011, is about nine miles away from the scene of his arrest.

"Woods had extremely slow and slurred speech", according to the report.

Florida police say tests showed Woods had no alcohol in his system, but he failed a roadside sobriety test.

Asked if he would like to comment on Woods, Nicklaus initially joked: "No, not really".

Nike, which signed Woods in 1996, had previously backed the 14-time major victor following his 2009 sex scandal, while other sponsors such as Gatorade and AT&T dropped him. The test corroborated Woods' claim in a Monday evening press release that "alcohol was not involved".

Tiger Woods' DUI arrest was apparently a result of the painkiller medication he was taking following his back surgery. The mugshot of a dishevelled and tired-looking Woods published on Monday went viral on social media to deepen the dents of the golfer's badly battered public image. 'What happened was an unexpected reaction to prescribed medications, ' he said. "Hopefully he's OK. I'm kind of wanting to find out more about the story and hope all is well".

Police noted the golfer was confused but cooperative. He said in a statement on his website last week he wants to return to professional golf.

Since his first back surgery on March 31, 2014, Woods has played just 19 worldwide events, with a single top-10 finish, seven missed cuts and three withdrawals. He also played at the Farmers Insurance Open in February, missing the cut after opening 76-72.

Woods was involved in a widely publicized 2009 accident in which he crashed into a fire hydrant in his neighborhood in Windermere Fla.

Woods allegedly told the police that he was coming from "Los Angeles, Cali. and was golfing". Woods lost sponsorship relationships with Gatorade and General Motors, among other companies, amid the scandal.
