Scotland striker Leigh Griffiths 'gutted' after England's last-gasp leveller

A punch-drunk Gordon Strachan reached for the boxing metaphors after admitting his emotions took a pounding in an extraordinary conclusion to Scotland's 2-2 draw with England.

"It was one of the most emotional games in my managerial career", he said.

A packed house welcomed the sides at Hampden Park, where it was not just the players under scrutiny but the supporters. All sorts of emotions.

"I don't think anybody realises, when they watch the telly, how big and strong and quick these guys are".

"It was like watching a heavyweight boxer against a middleweight".

"The power, the strength and the speed of England is phenomenal". They keep coming back. That was beyond the call of duty.

Southgate's men were staring down the barrel of their first defeat in 2018 World Cup qualifying after Leigh Griffiths' pair of late free-kicks had cancelled out Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's 70th-minute opener.

I've been in Scotland squads where the atmosphere among the lads wasn't anywhere near as good as that.

The visitors looked to pick up where they left off and Livermore slashed an effort at Scotland left wing-back Andrew Robertson with the ball rebounding off the defender and hitting the post. But for actual strikes, I can't.

England vs Scotland went from a bang average game of football to absolute madness In the space of eight minutes. There's a long way to go but there's room for improvement for all of them. He's a great character, you know, a wonderful character. "It does", he said.

"It's a game we should win but two moments of brilliant quality from Leigh Griffiths turned it on its head", Southgate said. The first game against Malta was a massive win 1-5. I can't blame anybody for anything.

Strachan added: "I saw Scotland's best ever free kick and then I see Scotland's second-best free kick, and then I have a noise that I have never heard anything like before".

"But him being the captain tomorrow, if selected and I can play with him then it will be a great honour to walk out behind him".

In the last five matches of Scotland, the team just won only one and it was against Slovenia in this Worl Cup tournament in March 2017. "All my thinking is left out on that touchline". The questions around this centre on character, on the ability to withstand events that go against you. But it's very hard to think.

"We should have been further ahead - if you don't get the second goal, you run the risk of an equaliser at some point".

A bit of frustration began to creep in with England toward the end of the frustrating 45 minutes as Southgate's men seemed to be getting out of ideas to use against defensively tight hosts. If I'm selected it'll be a great honour to walk out behind him.

"We beat England at Wembley but of course it was bittersweet because we lost 2-1 on aggregate", added Brown.
