Michelle Carter's lawyers aiming for acquittal Friday, before they call any witnesses

But prosecutors argue that numerous text messages are overwhelming evidence that while Carter, now 20, played the role of a loving and distraught girlfriend, she had secretly urged Roy to kill himself.

He described Ms Carter as a vulnerable teenager, too, saying she had suffered from an eating disorder, had been treated in a psychiatric hospital and was impaired by the side effects of an antidepressant.

A large part of the prosecution's case is built on the series of text messages from Carter that popped up on Roy's phone on the final day of his life.

Apparently, Roy was on the phone with Carter for 47 minutes before his death.

Cataldo noted the young man's extensive online searches about suicide methods, Carter's attempts to get him to seek help and her own bouts with mental issues.

During re-direct Verronneau said that on July 11, 2014, Roy sent a website screenshot about carbon monoxide to Carter. Carter eventually became annoyed that Roy hadn't followed through. Under cross-examination by Carter's lawyer, she acknowledged that suicide was listed as the cause of death on his death certificate. The two teens mostly communicated via text and phone; the two rarely saw each other in person even though they lived within 35 miles of each other, The Associated Press reported. I poured my heart to you ...

"You just need to do it, Conrad", she wrote.

"Hang yourself. Jump off a building".

Samantha Boardman was one of several of Carter's friends who testified Wednesday. Carter is charged with involuntary manslaughter for encouraging Conrad Roy III to kil.

The defense added, "Even if somebody supports another individual in a suicide, it doesn't create a homicide".

Prosecutors say Ms Carter was driven by a hunger for attention from her peers in Plainville, Mass. When Roy got out of the vehicle and then got back inside, Rayburn said, the process would have to start again.

Prosecutors allege that Carter pressured Roy to kill himself through a series of texts and phone calls. "I stayed on the phone for like 20! mins and that's all I heard". At one point, she expressed annoyance that Roy hadn't yet killed himself.

"I'm trying to do the best to dig you out - you're not aware of that, are you?" the defense lawyer asked, referring to a text message sent by Carter.

"These laws had to come about because when (Kevorkian) presented a bottle of poison for someone to take, he technically didn't kill them because they killed themselves", said Kari Hong, assistant professor of law at Boston College.

"You're going to have to prove me wrong because I don't think you really want to do this", one text message read.

Carter texted a classmate in September 2014, "I could've stopped him". When he said he didn't know, she told him he wasn't serious about it.

While the state Supreme Judicial Court upheld the charge on appeal early on in the case, Cataldo said the court ruled under the lower legal standard of probable cause.

Both witnesses appeared to back assertions by Carter's attorney, Joseph Cataldo, that Roy had long contemplated suicide and was depressed partly because of physical and verbal abuse from family members. She waived her right to a jury trial, meaning her case will be decided by Moniz, who will render a verdict after testimony is over.
