Health care on Senate Republicans' Agenda

"If the issues that are a concern to us are addressed, then I could see Democrats voting for it", Minority Leader Steve Shurtleff said. "What do we need changed from it, so we still got a ways to go".

It's been more than a month since House Republicans muscled their own repeal bill to passage.

The healthcare bill passed by the House could result in 23 million people losing insurance, the Congressional Budget Office estimated, though Republicans have challenged that conclusion.

The Justice Department has appointed a special counsel to oversee its probe into the Russian Federation issue and several congressional panels are also investigating the matter.

Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.), a physician by trade who has expressed concerns with the House's version of the AHCA, placed the Senate's odds at passing the health care bill "better than 50-50" in an interview with New York Times.

"Many in Washington and the media look at the huge health crises that we have facing Tennessee and the country today and they say, 'We can't afford to change our nation's health care policies at a time like this, '" said Price, a former Georgia congressman and physician, at the event sponsored by Healthy Tennessee and the Vanderbilt University School of Nursing.

In order to make that work, the Senate may have to keep some tax components in place, which won't sit well with conservatives.

McCaskill's fiery condemnation of the Republican party is an absolutely necessary reminder that those pulling the strings in both the House and the Senate now do not care about anything other than their own agenda. But lawmakers emerging from the room were tight-lipped about what exactly is on the table.

"There is a concerted effort and will be a concerted effort to stabilize the market", said Sen.

"What the big print giveth the small print taketh away".

"Conceptually, they could leave unaddressed numerous details of the Medicaid cuts and work them out in conference", Sarah Binder, a congressional expert at George Washington University, tells me, while cautioning that this is speculative. "I think there's a way we can get there, none of this is going to be easy", he said on Monday.

His comments came after the leaders met with President Trump at the White House to discuss health care reform. "We can't get there from here", Graham said.

Senator John Cornyn of Texas, the No. 2 Republican leader, said addressing the needs of people who already have serious or chronic health conditions is a key priority in negotiations for a Senate bill.

Lawmakers remain split over what to do about Medicaid. One of her collaborators is Portman, whose state also expanded Medicaid and who, like Heller and Capito, spoke out repeatedly against the House bill's treatment of the Medicaid expansion. Senate Republicans are mulling a version that would roll back the Medicaid expansion a bit more slowly. That expansion extended coverage to 11 to 12 million people in 31 states including Ohio, West Virginia, and Nevada.

The House plan would give states a set amount of money each year to cover their Medicaid enrollees. Among them is raising the debt ceiling to avoid defaulting on the nation's bills, always a thorny political lift. Toomey argues that using the growth rate of medical care spending would lead to an unsustainable Medicaid program, so he advocates for tying Medicaid funding increases to the standard inflation rate instead. Rand Paul of Kentucky was "irretrievably gone" because he can't support the tax credits, so the 52-seat majority is starting at 51 votes.

President Donald Trump met with Republican congressional leaders on Tuesday to rejuvenate efforts to overhaul the USA healthcare and tax systems as investigations into Russian meddling in the 2016 election campaign weigh on his administration. In a White House meeting, Trump welcomed indications by senior Republicans that the Senate might vote on a healthcare bill in July, before it breaks for the summer, after the House of Representatives passed its own version in May."Now the Senate I'm sure will follow suit and get a bill across the finish line this summer that will be great healthcare and I'm looking forward to seeing it", Trump said.

Some Republicans, including Sen. James E. Risch, Idaho Republican, told reporters.
