Britain's May reaches 'outline' power deal after election

Polls open at 7am as voters elect who they are sending to Westminster

"We will welcome any such deal being agreed, as it will provide the stability and certainty the whole country requires as we embark on Brexit and beyond", Downing Street said in a statement.

Details of the deal will be discussed by May's cabinet which is scheduled to meet at 10 Downing Street on Monday morning.

A source close to the DUP said the party was seeking more funding for the province and concessions for former British soldiers in exchange for supporting May.

Ms Foster has refused to resign over a scandal from her time as finance minister when it was found she had personally campaigned to keep a government-backed renewable-energy scheme opened despite it overspending by £400m (€455m).

British Prime Minister Theresa May called a snap election for Parliament almost three years early so that the United Kingdom would have "strong and stable" leadership to negotiate the terms of "Brexit", its withdrawal from the European Union approved by voters in a referendum nearly a year ago.

The stunning poll outcome now leaves May battling to unite different factions of her party and reliant on a handful of Northern Irish parliamentarians just nine days before Britain starts the tortuous process of negotiating its departure from the EU.

In another move in her bid to cling to power, the Prime Minister has parted company with her two closest No. 10 aides, joint chiefs of staff Nick Timothy and Fiona Hill.

They were replaced by Gavin Barwell, a former housing minister who lost his seat in the election.

"From hubris to humiliation", said the left-leaning Guardian.

"May stares into the abyss", said The Times' Saturday edition while the Daily Mail led with "Tories Turn On Theresa".

Timothy and Hill had worked for May when she was interior minister, before she became premier in July past year in the chaotic days that followed the Brexit vote. Some say her failure means the government must now take a more flexible approach to the divorce.

If May was right that her party's narrow majority impaired her ability to negotiate optimal terms for withdrawal from the European Union, it's hard to see how she (or another Conservative prime minister) wouldn't be at an even greater disadvantage negotiating on behalf of a minority government.

But her party is deeply divided over what they want from Brexit and the result means British businesses still have no idea what trading rules they can expect in the coming years.

Several Conservative lawmakers have warned that May can not carry on indefinitely, after throwing away a 17-seat majority in the 650-seat House of Commons.

May announced the party would try to work with Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party, an alliance that is fraught with difficulties.

The election, which took place on Thursday (June 8), resulted in a hung parliament with the Conservatives failing to win a majority.

Some Tories, including the party's Scottish leader Ruth Davidson, are unhappy about a deal with the DUP because of the party's opposition to gay marriage and abortion and other policy clashes with the Conservatives.

But the wooing of the DUP risks upsetting the political balance in Northern Ireland by aligning London more closely with the pro-British side in the divided province, where a power-sharing government with Irish nationalists is now suspended.

Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron also called for details of the deal to be published, saying: "The actions of this (Conservative) government will have profound implications for the Brexit negotiations and the future of our country".
