UN Passes Resolution To Expand North Korea Blacklist

As tensions have increased between Pyongyang and Washington, the U.S. has been pressing China to rein in Kim Jong Un's nuclear programme.

Concern over the North's weapons program intensified after North Korea test-fired yet another ballistic missile last week, the latest in a series of launches in its quest to develop weapons capable of hitting the United States.

Though US military exercises in the Korean peninsula have been controversial in the worldwide community, US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley urged security council members to enforce the new sanctions.

"The United States is fully committed to defending ourselves and our allies against North Korean aggression", Haley said. The measure added new individuals and entities connected to Pyongyang's ballistic missile and nuclear programs to the existing United Nations blacklist.

For his part Mattis on Saturday pledged the United States would stay engaged on North Korea, calling Kim Jong Un regime's missile program "a clear and present danger".

Fourteen individuals and four entities linked to Pyongyang´s nuclear and missile programs were added to the United Nations blacklist, which imposes a global travel ban and asset freeze.

The ambassador also called on other countries to "sever diplomatic ties and cease illegal trade with North Korea".

The State Department urged North Korea on Sunday to stop destabilizing actions and World War 3 rhetoric, and return to talks after Pyongyang rejected a U.N. Security Council sanctions resolution and vowed to further enlarge its nuclear arsenal. The hermit state's spokesman also revealed that their country will continue its nuclear weapons development program.

"It is incumbent on all parties concerned to exercise restraint and do more to ease tension and build mutual trust, instead of the contrary", Liu added.

The U.N. Security Council first imposed sanctions on Pyongyang in 2006 over its ballistic missile and nuclear program. Russian Federation said the suggestion merits "serious consideration".

It also said the country "will not flinch from the road to build up nuclear forces" and vowed to continue to carry out ballistic missile launches "until the moment when the US and its followers are brought to reason about the root cause and a solution to the nuclear issue".

North Korea has declared that the U.S. do bring the day of their continent to ash.

"Ultimately, we believe China will come to recognize North Korea as a strategic liability, not an asset", Mattis said.

Trump has said he is leaning more heavily on China — North Korea's only significant ally — to contain that threat.

The Security Council adopted two sanctions resolutions past year to ramp up pressure on Pyongyang and deny Kim the hard currency needed to fund his military programs. However, Kim Jong-un ignored all the warning of G7 summit leaders and fired one short-range ballistic missile that has landed in the sea on Japan.

In his speech to the Shangri-La Dialogue, sponsored by the International Institute for Strategic Studies, Mattis sought to balance his hopeful comments on China with sharp criticism of what he called Beijing's disregard for international law by its "indisputable militarization" of artificial islands in disputed areas of the South China Sea.
