UK threat level to remain at severe following London attack: PM May

The latest assault, in which three suspects mowed down pedestrians on London Bridge before slashing their way through a nearby market, inserts an unpredictable new dynamic - the fear and uncertainty sowed by terrorism - into this week's contest, which was already tightening. "However, there was no intelligence to suggest that this attack was being planned and the investigation had been prioritized accordingly", British police said in a statement.

Islamic State, which is losing territory in Syria and Iraq to an offensive backed by a US -led coalition, said its militants were responsible for the attack, though it is unclear what links the attackers had to the group.

"A number of people have been detained", police said in a statement after two early morning raids in east London.

IS has claimed responsibility for three attacks in Britain since March, and Dick described the recent wave of violence as "unprecedented in my working life".

The UK is facing a "severe and high tempo terrorist threat", the force said. Since Saturday's deadly attack in London, May has traded blows with Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn over who has the worst record on countering terrorism. News footage showed people fleeing the scene of Saturday's auto and knife attack, where 7 were killed and dozens injured, but one man stood out, walking slowly and appearing to try to prevent his pint of beer from spilling.

An off-duty, unarmed London police officer who was having a drink after work rushed to help but is now in hospital in a serious condition, London police chief Cressida Dick said.

May was due to chair a meeting of the government's emergency response committee on Monday. She added that "additional security measures" had been installed on bridges.

While noting that such attacks generally have a short-term effect on voters' judgments, Fieldhouse said that because this one occurred so close to an election, "you would expect it to have some impact".

British police on Monday identified two of the three men who killed seven people during a weekend terror attack - including one man who came to England from Pakistan with his asylum-seeking parents.

With the Brexit negotiations beginning just 11 days after the June 8 polls, May said, "we have no time to waste".

Other experts said the attack underscores the issue of leadership, already a dominant theme in a contest where the biggest question, Britain's exit from the European Union, has been decided. She was engaged to a man by the name of Tyler Ferguson.

"While our pain will never diminish, it is important for us all to carry on with our lives in direct opposition to those who wish to destroy us and remember that hatred is the refuge of small-minded individuals and will only breed more", she said.

Corbyn noted that for six years, police numbers fell while May was in charge of security as interior minister, implementing a budget-cutting drive.

"We're calling for a restoration of police numbers, and there's a call being made for her to go, because of what she's done on the police numbers". "The mass murderers who brought terror to our streets in London and Manchester want our election to be halted".

Police said they now had 10 people in custody after releasing two of the 12 people arrested on Sunday.
