Trump accuses London Mayor Khan of 'pathetic excuse' over attack statement

Police said in a statement on Monday that British police and intelligence agencies were familiar with 27-year-old Khuram Shazad Butt, a British citizen born in Pakistan. Rachid Redouane, 30...had claimed to be Moroccan and Libyan.

Khan, who was elected mayor of London in 2016, had said in a statement following the attack, "Londoners will see an increased police presence today and over the course of the next few days".

"A very high priority for us is to try to understand whether they were working with anybody else", London police chief Cressida Dick told BBC television.

President Donald Trump ratcheted up his attacks on London mayor Sadiq Khan on Monday even as British Prime Minister Theresa May and the American embassy in London distanced themselves from the president's prior comments.

Trump accused Khan - London's first Muslim mayor - of offering a "pathetic excuse" for comments that the USA president earlier misconstrued about policing in response to Saturday's attack, which left seven people dead. The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility.

People attend a vigil to remember the victims of the attack on London Bridge and Borough Market, at Potters Field Park, in central London, Britain, June 5, 2017.

"I think, again, the President's point is something he said, frankly, back - It's been nearly two years now, a year and a half ago, when the President talked about how we have to be more committed to national security".

"The police and our partners are doing everything we can across the country to help prevent further attacks and protect the public from harm", Rowley said. Most still remain hospitalized - 18 of whom are in critical condition.
