India has joined the world's space heavyweights

The rocket is powered by an indigenous cryogenic engine that uses liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen as propellants.

"Congratulations to the dedicated scientists of ISRO for the successful launch of GSLV - MKIII D1/GSAT-19 mission", he said.

The launch happened at 5:28 pm local time at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, with the rocket lifting a high-throughput communications satellite as its first payload.

That led to the design of the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle series, the fourth generation of Indian launch vehicles.

In February, India put a record 104 satellites in orbit from a single rocket, surpassing Russian Federation which launched 39 satellites in one mission in June 2014.

At 3,136 kg (6,914 lb), or more than three tonnes and the height of a 13-storey building, the GSAT-19 satellite is the heaviest India has tried to put in orbit, the space agency said. It has also set the stage for the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in its manned mission. First, it reduces/removes their dependence on outside agencies like the French company Ariane Space for launching of heavy satellites (four to six-tonne category) on commercial basis.

Weighing 3,136-kilogram, the GSAT-19 satellite is the heaviest satellite made and launched from our own soil till date. The space suit is ready and a crew module was tested in 2014. Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre Director S. Somanath, told IANS that the inputs of the 2014 mission enabled the ISRO to reduce the rocket load by around 20 per cent.

The successful launch of GSLV Mk III helped ISRO finally crossing hurdle which it had faced every single time while launching first time rockets, according to TOI report.

Today's GSLV mission is significant for India as ISRO had been depending on foreign launchers for orbiting communication satellites weighing more than 2,300 kgs. In compression, with the earlier rockets developed by India (SLV, ASLV and PSLV), the GSLV is bigger in size and goal (for launching heavy satellites) and hence fondly gets referred to as Fat Boy. It had also experienced disappointment during the first developmental launch of Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicle (ASLV) carrying SROSS-1 satellite on March 24, 1987, the TOI report says. The need for a heavier launch vehicle was felt during the 1990s to meet the country's requirement for heavier communication satellites with large numbers of transponders. Industry sources said globally the trend is the weight of communication satellites is going up while the weight of earth observation satellites has come down.
