Former Penn State administrators sentenced in connection with Sandusky abuse

Prosecutors said in their arguments that all three were informed about the abuse in 2001 but did not report it to police. In October that year, he was sentenced to a minimum 30 years and a maximum of 60 years in prison. Spanier and two other former university administrators were each sentenced Friday to at least two months in jail for failing to alert authorities to a 2001 allegation against ex-assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, a decision that enabled the now-convicted serial predator to continue molesting boys. The assistant said that when he told school officials, they failed to report the incident to police.

Penn State has paid out almost a quarter-billion dollars in fines, settlements and other costs associated with the scandal, and the football program suffered heavy NCAA sanctions.

Paterno "could have made that phone call without so much as getting his hands dirty", Boccabella said. Spanier was also a fascinating character: He studied sociology and wrote papers about mate-swapping and extramarital behavior, which made for entertaining reading for students.

But Spanier came under criticism for what detractors said was his misperception of the world outside academia and his failure to understand the implications of the Sandusky scandal when it broke.

Curley's time behind bars will be the longest - his sentence is seven to 23 months, with three of those in jail.

A jury in March convicted Spanier of child endangerment.

"The only downside for us is if the message isn't "heard" and acted upon, and we then become vulnerable for not having reported it", Spanier told Curley and Schultz in a 2001 email exchange, saying it was a "humane and a reasonable way" to deal with Sandusky.

Prosecutors slammed all three men, saying they cared more about themselves than about protecting children. They pleaded guilty to related charges and testified at the trial of Spanier, who refused a plea deal. At least four victims at Sandusky's trial said they were molested after 2001.

The case hinged on coaching assistant Mike McQuearys claim that he witnessed Sandusky — a retired member of the coaching staff who ran a charity for youngsters — molesting a boy in the team showers in 2001.

Attorneys for the three former administrators have not returned calls seeking comment.

His lawyers have said he will appeal the conviction, and they argued for a sentence of probation rather than jail time.

Boccabella sentenced Spanier to 4 to 12 months' confinement, with at least 2 months of that in jail followed by home confinement, and a $7,500 fine. Curley's sentence was the most severe, as he must serve three months in prison followed by four months of house arrest. He said Spanier "devoted a substantial part of his career to the welfare of children, youth, and families".

The judge said he was not convinced that Spanier was as culpable as the other two.
