British Airways disruption continues for third day after IT system crash

"At Heathrow, we operated virtually all our scheduled long-haulflights, though the knock-on effects of Saturday's disruptionresulted in a reduced short-haul programme", Sky news quoted a BA spokeswoman said:"We apologise again to customers for the frustration andinconvenience they are experiencing and thank them for theircontinued patience".

British Airways customers flying from Heathrow had to face delays yet again on Sunday, whereas British Airways ran its normal schedule at the Gatwick.

British Airways' planes were unable to take off from Heathrow and Gatwick airports amid the outage.

BA canceled all flights from Heathrow and Gatwick Saturday after the IT outage, which it blamed on a power-supply problem.

BA had to cancel a total of eight flights from Dublin to Heathrow between Saturday, Sunday and Monday as a result. Furlong said the airline probably lost about £4 million in operating profit a day during the outage. The British Airways has not explained the cause of the power problem. Under European Union passenger rights rules, the airline is liable for payments to those whose travel plans were disrupted.

Davy analyst Stephen Furlong said the cost to the carrier of cancelling one day of operations was around 30 million pounds.

Cruz apologized in a video statement, saying: "I know this has been a frightful time for customers".

Under EU law customers whose flights were delayed or cancelled are entitled to assistance and compensation. Still, he said, recovery can be time consuming because it isn't always clear where the failure occurred or data has been corrupted.

Thousands of travellers faced further chaos on Sunday as British Airways cancelled more than a hundred flights from London's Heathrow Airport following an IT system failure. The two Heathrow-bound flights left Dubai after 20-minute delays this morning. showed 27 cancellations for Monday.

Data from flight tracker showed BA's sister airlines in Spain, Iberia and Air Nostrum, cancelled over 300 flights on Monday, a bank holiday in the United Kingdom that sees a high level of air travel.

"We would never compromise the integrity and security of our IT systems", British Airways said.

"Delta and Southwest airlines both had similar issues within the previous year and while both were very inconvenient for passengers, they didn't have a lasting impact on the stock price", Furlong added.

But he added that it might be harder for passengers to claim compensation, as BA may blame "extraordinary circumstances" - "like an act of God or force majeure" - meaning the airline would only have to reimburse hotel and food costs.

Thousands of bags remain at Heathrow Airport, but BA has advised passengers not to return to collect them, saying they will be couriered to customers.
