Flight chaos could cost British Airways more than $100mn

BA's outage came on a busy weekend in Britain, where Monday was a public holiday and many schoolchildren were beginning a week's holiday.

He said the failure affected "all the operating of our systems - baggage, operations, power processing".

What is known is that recently appointed Chief Executive - the Spanish born Alex Cruz - has simply apologised to customers for the problem and thanked them for their patience saying "I know this has been a awful time for customers".

Problems continued over the long weekend, and although BA said it expected to run a full schedule from Heathrow and Gatwick on Tuesday, it was left with work to do to in the longer term to restore its reputation.

Following a computer outage that stranded thousands of passengers over Memorial Day weekend, British Airways has announced that passengers with cancelled flights will receive a full refund.

Costly glitch Financial analysts estimated the computer crash could cost the company up to 100 million pounds (115 million euros, $128 million) in compensation claims and lost business.

Shares in IAG, which is also listed in Madrid, had already tumbled heavily in trading in Spain on Monday, wiping around 410 million euro (£357 million) off the stock.

British Airways will meet all claims for compensation stipulated by European Union rules for cancelled or heavily delayed flights, after the systems failure at the weekend disrupted travel for thousands of passengers, the airline has told The Independent.

Travellers, however, some times find it hard to get the airlines to cough up these refunds.

British Airways flight schedules at London's Gatwick and Heathrow airports are back to normal but the airline was Wednesday still attempting to reunite some passengers with their bags after a crippling IT failure on Saturday.

In a video statement posted Saturday, British Airwys CEO Alex Cruz said the airline was experiencing a "major IT system failure" that caused "very severe disruption" to the airline's operations worldwide.

The union had warned BA against this previous year on February 29, 2016.

The GMB union has blamed the problem on technical staff being outsourced from the United Kingdom to India.

The outage, which BA blamed on a "power supply issue", led to the cancellation of all its flights from both Heathrow and Gatwick on Saturday, with dozens more flights cancelled on Sunday.

Chief executive Michael O'Leary said: "While many competitors subcontract their IT development to high-cost third parties, in Ryanair we believe the success of labs has vindicated our decision to manage and control this development internally".

To the thousands of passengers that have been affected and that are still stranded, Cruz said he was "profusely sorry".

Heathrow, Europe's busiest airport, advised affected BA passengers not to travel to the airport unless their flights had been rebooked, or were scheduled to take off on Monday.
