European Union leader urges Trump not to ditch Paris climate deal

"Don't know which way [the] Paris [pact decision] will go, but I've done all I can to advise directly to POTUS, through others in WH & via councils, that we remain", Musk said on Twitter today. The stated goal of the document is to limit global warming to "well under" 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit), though current targets fall short of that mark.

Councilman Mike Bonin introduced a motion that would direct the city's departments to adhere to the Paris agreement as official policy.

The Paris Agreement was in part brokered by Obama and was seen as a major breakthrough after the previous accord, the Kyoto protocol, failed to include the USA and China, the world's two biggest polluters.

He said it would take at least three to four years for any country to leave the agreement. "Stay in the agreement, because it's voluntary, and try to make the world respond to better business practices when it comes to cleaning up carbon".

Fox, who has clashed with Trump since last year's presidential campaign, said the U.S. leader's decision "condemns this generation and those to come" and would leave "a dark legacy just to satisfy your greediness".

"That's the wrong direction, I think".

A second option would be quicker and more dramatic. S. will withdraw from the Paris global climate pact, making the announcement from the Rose Garden Thursday afternoon.

The motion introduced by Bonin does not explain how Los Angeles will hold to the Paris Agreement, but the city's has already pledged to reduce greenhouse emissions by 80 percent by 2050 and for the Department of Power and Water to be coal-free by 2025. "This notion, 'I am Trump, I am American, America first and I am getting out, ' that is not going to happen".

The landmark agreement also includes participation from China and India, known as two of the world's largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions.

Backing out of the UNFCCC would be harder for future administrations to reverse. Franken also said that taking the lead on climate change would benefit the US economy and stimulate the domestic clean energy sector.

The president said the deal is unfair to America, and he will attempt to re-enter the deal on more favourable terms.

The comments came after media reports said Trump would withdraw from the global agreement to curb emissions.

It may also direct the secretary of state and the EPA administrator to look at the Paris Agreement and determine whether it is in the interests of the United States.
