China warns of 'global consensus' on tackling climate change

Abandoning the pact would isolate the USA from a raft of worldwide allies who spent years negotiating the 2015 agreement to fight global warming and pollution by reducing carbon emissions in almost 200 nations.

Building suspense about America's role in the world, President Donald Trump planned to announce Thursday whether the USA would stay in a global climate pact.

In a meaningful tweet, the United Nations (UN) also said, "Climate change is undeniable".

Meanwhile, Trump has declared that abandoning the Paris climate agreement would be a victory for the American economy.

The executive director of the Sierra Club is calling the expected US pullout from a global agreement on climate change a "historic mistake".

Agreed on by up to 200 countries, the deal aims to reduce carbon dioxide and other emissions from the burning of fossil fuels.

Under the agreement, the USA had agreed to reduce the country's pollution emissions to 26 percent to 28 percent of 2005 levels by 2025 - about 1.6 billion tons.

Mr Trump has made it clear that he does not share his predecessor Barack Obama's enthusiasm for the agreement. "If we can't, that's fine", he said.

He ends the tweet with his campaign slogan, "MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!".

"Details on how the withdrawal will be executed are being worked out by a small team including EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt".

Another option, said University of California, Berkeley climate scientist Zeke Hausfather, would be for Trump to withdraw from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the treaty on which the Paris accord was based, which would take only a year.

Aides to Trump said he was listening with an open mind to the other leaders' arguments about Paris, but had yet to decide whether to withdraw the USA from the pact. FILE - In this October 20, 2016 file photo, Finnish Prime Minister Juha Sipila is seen in Brussels.

Mr Guterres was asked for his view on reports that Mr Trump was ready to pull the USA out of the Paris deal, to which he replied: "When you disagree with someone, you try to convince that person, no?" Musk came out strongly against the president's executive order on immigration, which temporarily banned travel from seven Muslim-majority countries. He has repeatedly promised to strengthen the coal industry.

In a Berlin speech, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said that fighting climate change is a "global consensus" and an "international responsibility".

The European Union and China are working on a joint declaration reaffirming their commitment to climate and energy policy and the implementation of the Paris agreement, according to an EU official with knowledge of the plans.

After taking office, however, Trump faced pressure to stay in the deal from investors, worldwide powers and business leaders, including some in the coal industry. They said the deal would require the United States government to regulate greenhouse gas emissions, which would hurt business. -China pact is a direct response to the Trump administration, which has single-handedly dismantled the bilateral relationship that the United States and China forged throughout the Obama years. Trump's son-in-law and top aide, Jared Kushner, was said to be neutral on the deal.

Oil majors Shell and Exxon Mobil have also supported the pact along with a number of Republican lawmakers.

Mr. Trump spent much of last week meeting with European leaders, who pressured him to remain in the deal.
