UN Security Council for imposing sanctions on North Korea's missile test

United States Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley delivers remarks at a Security Council meeting in April

"Having a missile test is not the way to sit down with the president, because he's absolutely not going to do it", Haley told ABC News's "This Week".

China, North Korea's sole main ally which nevertheless objects to its weapons programmes, called for restraint and for no one to exacerbate tensions. The test gives a boost to leader Kim Jong Un as he seeks to show his people that he's standing up to America and South Korea. North Korea claimed the missile is capable of being armed with a nuclear warhead.

Davis said this weapons program that they have is unlawful, and it represents a clear grave threat to U.S. national security.

A South Korean government minister has said North Korea's missile program is progressing faster than expected, just hours after the UN Security Council demanded the reclusive country to halt all nuclear and ballistic missile tests. Independent journalists were not given access to cover the event depicted in this photo. A two-stage ICBM launch is a major achievement, and because of North Korea's aforementioned geographic location, even the test flight could be enough to put the world on the brink.

The missile traveled approximately 430 miles.

Han Min-koo told South Korea's parliament the test-launch had been detected by the controversial U.S. THAAD anti-missile system, whose deployment in the South has infuriated China. The first reason is relatively obvious: North Korea doesn't really have anywhere to shoot a missile without pissing someone else off.

The missile, which flew 430 miles and reached an altitude of more than 1,245 miles, went further and higher than the nation's last successful test launch.

"The secretary-general calls on the DPRK to ensure full compliance with its worldwide obligations and return to the path of denuclearization", he said. Some analysts believe the missile, if proven in further tests, could reach Alaska and Hawaii if fired on a normal, instead of a lofted, trajectory. During a 2016 test, the Musudan reached a height of 1,410 kilometers (880 miles).

North Korea boasted early Monday that the latest launch was personally supervised by leader Kim Jong Un.

The U.N.'s most powerful body says that North Korea is "greatly increasing tension in the region and beyond" and that it is vitally important the country immediately show "sincere commitment to denuclearization through concrete action".

The North's state-run media agency said Sunday's test involved a mid-to-long range ballistic missile that could be blasted off and out of the planet's atmosphere and then return, and quoted leader Kim Jong Un as saying the US mainland is in "sighting range for a strike".

"We need to return to dialogue with North Korea and stop scaring it and find ways to resolve these problems peacefully, " he said. "It also verified the homing feature of the warhead under the worst re-entry situation and accurate performance of detonation system".

As with much of North Korea's secretive arms program, this couldn't be independently confirmed. Traditionally, the United States and China have negotiated new measures before involving remaining council members.

Over the weekend, a senior North Korean official said direct talks with Washington were possible under the right circumstances, echoing a recent statement made by President Trump. A Japanese military official says the missile flew for about 30 minutes and landed in the Sea of Japan.
