Deputy attorney general stands behind anti-Comey memo

Deputy attorney general stands behind anti-Comey memo

The law enforcement investigation into possible coordination between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign has identified a current White House official as a significant person of interest.

"Congress is going to want to look over the shoulder of this investigation", he said. When Trump spotted Comey anyway, the Federal Bureau of Investigation director extended his hand so that they would only have a handshake, but the president pulled him in for a hug anyway. "I think the American people need the scope to be as broad as necessary to regain the confidence".

Trump's embattled presidency, which has invited increasingly frequent comparison with Richard Nixon and Watergate, passed a new landmark at the press conference when he was asked bluntly, in front of a foreign head of state, whether he recalled anything he had done that "might be worthy of criminal charges in these investigation or impeachment". Trump reiterated that point in an interview with NBC News' Lester Holt the next day, claiming the director told him there was no such investigation ― once over dinner and twice on the phone.

The investigation, Issa said, "includes any questions about referrals related to any misconduct, any interference and there were questions well outside the Russian scope". Mr. Comey - who is 6 feet 8 inches tall and was wearing a dark blue suit that day - told Mr. Wittes that he tried to blend in with the blue curtains in the back of the room, in the hopes that Mr. Trump would not spot him and call him out. Trump told NBC two days after firing Comey, however, that he meant to do it "regardless" of Rosenstein's recommendation.

"The President has always emphasized the importance of making deals with Russian Federation as it relates to Syria, Ukraine, defeating ISIS, and other key issues for the benefit and safety of the American people", Spicer said in a statement regarding to the Times' scoop.

"We have a very divided country because of that and many other things", Trump said.

That was the White House's position initially after the deputy attorney general argued in a memo that Comey had erred in handling the FBI's investigation into Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton's private email server, even though Trump had praised Comey on the campaign trail previous year.

The Justice Department has long sought to keep an appropriate distance from the White House.

Trott says Maryland Democratic congressman Elijah Cummings asked something like, "So you woke up one morning and chose to write a memo?". Now, the naming of former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special prosecutor has been met with bipartisan praise and relief.

Eleven days ago, the call for an independent investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election was split along party lines.

Deputy U.S. Attorney General Rod Rosenstein (C) arrives to brief the full U.S. Senate on details of President Donald Trump's recent firing of FBI Director James Comey at the U.S. Capitol in Washington. In an interview two days after the firing, Trump told NBC he had been planning to terminate Comey regardless and was thinking of Russian Federation when he made that decision.
