'Click It or Ticket' enforcement begins Monday

Today, almost 92 percent buckle up, but 8 percent still don't and the number of people who don't buckle up doubles to 16 percent at night.

"There are people who will tell you firsthand that a seat belt saved their life", said Col. Scott Hernandez, chief of the CSP.

Agencies will conduct extra seat belt violation enforcement, which will run for two weeks throughout the entire state.

FHP said wearing a seat belt is one of the most effective ways to help prevent injuries or death in the event of a traffic crash. These tragic losses are completely preventable.

"As we kick off the busy summer season, it is crucial that everyone buckles up every time they go out, day and night - no excuses", Sheriff Rick Staly said.

ยท CPS law requires children to be in child restraint or booster seat until age 8 and 4 feet 9 inches tall. Law enforcement officials are out on Connecticut's roads enforcing the state occupant protection laws and issuing citations to those who are unbuckled.

More than 250 state and local law enforcement agencies are cracking down on drivers not wearing seatbelts. Seatbelts must also be worn as they are created to be worn, not under an arm. Residents are encouraged to use #ClickOnMI on social media to participate in the challenge to increase seat belt use in the Midwest region, and show their state pride. The campaign is a partnership between JD Motorsports, Xfinity Series Driver Ross Chastain, and the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee.

Back in 2009, MI led the nation with 98% of people wearing their seatbelts. In Los Angeles County, the ticket cost for an adult seat belt violation is $162, with penalties for not restraining a child at $465.

Chastain's No. 4 Xfinity Series racecar is adorned with the words "Protect Your Melon" and the campaign's logo.

By buckling up and using child safety seats properly, you significantly increase your chances of surviving a crash. It dropped to 94.5% past year, which dropped the state to 12th. Nationally, the compliance rate is 88.5 percent.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration says drivers are 75 percent less likely to be killed in a rollover crash if they are wearing a seat belt. It is safest to keep a child rear-facing as long as possible.

In 2016, 58 percent of motor vehicle fatalities in North Dakota were not wearing their seat belt.
