Trump said firing Comey relieved 'great pressure'

DONALD TRUMP TOLD Russian diplomats that firing the "nut job" FBI Director James Comey relieved "great pressure" on him.

Meanwhile, on Friday evening the Senate Intelligence Committee confirmed that Mr Comey would testify in "open session" about the investigation into possible links between the Trump team and Russian officials. "Moreover, the American people deserve an opportunity to hear it".

The New York Times reports that Trump also had a few choice words for the Russians about the Federal Bureau of Investigation director, James Comey, whom he defenestrated last week.

Now, he'll have the opportunity to talk not just about Russian Federation investigation, but why Trump fired him.

It says the president then told Russia's foreign minister and ambassador that he "faced great pressure because of Russian Federation".

He also reportedly said, "I faced great pressure because of Russian Federation".

"Former Department of Justice officials from both political parties have criticized Director Comey's decisions", he said in an opening statement. The House Oversight Committee sent a letter requesting the memo referenced in the report no later than May 24.

"I believe that's why the deputy attorney general went out and wrote his very, very strong letter", Trump said.

The New York Times reported that former FBI Director James Comey, later fired by Trump, detailed in a memo how the president asked him to drop an investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

It came two days after Mr Rosenstein named Mr Mueller as a special counsel to investigate possible co-ordination between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign to influence the 2016 presidential election.

The FBI's investigation into Trump's Russia ties has been going on for a while now, but McClatchy reported on Friday that now, the Trump-Russia investigation involves a possible cover-up by White House officials as well.

The White House originally refused to comment, but after CNN broke the story, a White House official said "it's not true". "Once again, the real story is that our national security has been undermined by the leaking of private and highly classified conversations".

The investigation is not only focused on those now in the administration, but also Trump campaign associates no longer working for the president.

Mr Comey was sacked by Donald Trump last week.

Pressure is mounting in Congress - especially among Republicans - to scrutinize Mr. Trump's investigation in light of the rapid-fire sequences of events taking place since Comey's firing more than a week ago.
