Russian Federation investigation identifies White House official as person of interest

He said he was concerned about Comey's public handling of Hillary Clinton's email investigation - especially that news conference Comey gave when he said the FBI didn't recommend prosecuting Clinton.

Trump's dismissal of Comey was met with bipartisan derision.

Comey is known to produce memos documenting especially sensitive or unsettling encounters, such as after the February meeting.

Comey, however, turned down an invitation to testify publicly before the Senate Judiciary Committee as well, which left chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., "extremely disappointed", the lawmakers said in a statement Friday evening. Meanwhile, Trump, who has denied pressuring Flynn, tweeted that he was the subject of a "witch hunt".

After two days of the White House claiming the Justice Department had initiated Comey's firing and that it was because of the Hillary Clinton investigation, Trump said to hell with it; he blurted out that he was determined to fire Comey all along and that the Russian Federation investigation was on his mind when he made a decision to do it.

Meanwhile inside sources have claimed Russian officials bragged over their ability to use Mr Flynn to influence President Trump.

President Donald Trump has been narrowing a short list and interviewing candidates to replace FBI Director James Comey, whom Trump fired on May 9.

The comments were read to the Times by an American official and were from a White House document summarizing the meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Russian Ambassador to the US Sergey Kislyak.

"No, the president had lost - again, like I said - he'd lost confidence in Director Comey, and frankly, he'd been considering letting Director Comey go since the day he was elected", Sanders responded.

The paper said the comments came from the White House's written account of the Oval Office meeting. The scope of the investigation expanded after reports that Trump might have pressured former FBI Director James Comey to drop the agency's investigation into Michael Flynn, Trump's former national security adviser.

Fox News White House correspondent Kevin Corke reported today that an unnamed White House official said the reports seem like a "coordinated attack" on the president by the media.

White House officials believe the President has the backing of Republican allies in Congress and that impeachment is not in the cards, CNN reported.

"In a concern about divulging intelligence they leaked actually not just the information from the meeting, but also indicated the sources and methods to a to a newspaper".

An Obama-era White House staffer said: "This was a five-alarm fire from early on, the way the Russians were talking about him".

The hearing will occur after Memorial Day, which is May 29, 2017. That's increased the appetite on Capitol Hill to hear directly from Comey himself.

House of Representative members described Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein's briefing as "very guarded" and "frustratingly cautious", deferring many answers to being under the purview of the recently-appointed special counsel, Robert Mueller.

He says he asked career Justice Department lawyers to review the memo.
