Comey to testify on role in FBI's Russian Federation inquiry

US President Donald Trump raised the firing of the Federal Bureau of Investigation director in a meeting with Russia's foreign minister to explain why he had been unable to find areas of co-operation with Moscow, two top administration officials say.

The FBI's Trump-Russia investigation has moved into the White House, according to reports that pursued the president as he began his maiden foreign trip, while former FBI director James Comey has agreed to testify before the Senate intelligence committee.

"I just fired the head of the FBI He was insane, a real nut job", Mr Trump said, according to a document detailing the Russian visit.

The Times reported Trump noted the Russia investigation as he told Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Ambassador to the U.S. Sergey Kislyak of his decision to fire Comey.

McMaster also said in Sunday's interview that the central goal of Trump's conversation with Lavrov and Russia's ambassador to Washington was to confront Russian Federation on areas where the United States considers them disruptive, such as Syria.

Rubio said White House officials had told him they had no transcripts nor notes of Trump's meeting with Russian officials but "apparently someone has discussed them, or leaked them". Rosenstein said that though he was personally fond of Comey, "I thought it was appropriate to seek a new leader".

The Senate Intelligence Committee, chaired by Republican Richard Burr of North Carolina, said it expected Comey to "shed light on issues critical to this committee's investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election, " in announcing the open hearing after Memorial Day weekend (May 2) by which time Trump is expected to return from his five-nation trip. On Friday, media outlets that revealed that Trump had called sacked FBI Director James Comey a "crazy nut job" said the story was based on an insider who read out minutes of the Oval Office meeting to them - an astonishing breach that suggests even Trump's own inner circle is concerned about his actions.

"This cloud is impacting everything else", Rubio said, describing a number of questions, such as possible obstruction of justice, that are hanging over the White House.

Mr Trump acknowledged, in an NBC News interview, that he had chose to fire Mr Comey before reading Mr Rosenstein's memo.

The Justice Department on Friday released the text of Rosenstein's opening remarks for the briefings on Capitol Hill. But White House spokesman Sean Spicer has called the president's rhetoric part of his deal-making, contending that Comey had created "unnecessary pressure" on Trump's ability to negotiate with Russian Federation on a range of issues.

The White House has repeatedly insisted that a "thorough investigation will confirm that there was no collusion between the campaign and any foreign entity".

"If any president tries to impede an investigation - any president, no matter who it is - by interfering with the FBI, yes, that would be problematic".
