Liberals hang on to win BC's first minority government in 65 years

The Spanish government said several companies including Telefonica had been targeted in ransomware cyberattack that affected the Windows operating system

Christy Clark and her Liberal Party came up one seat short of a majority government in Tuesday's election, putting the province into a minority government situation for the first time since 1952.

Looking at seats the NDP picked up where the Green vote - if it went entirely Liberal - could have turned the race, the NDP gained in all but two, Burnaby North and Courtenay-Comox.

The BC Greens are now elected in three ridings - leader Andrew Weaver's seat in Oak Bay-Gordon Head plus breakthroughs on Vancouver Island, including Sonia Furstenau in Cowichan Valley.

Also out are Liberal cabinet ministers Suzanne Anton and Amrik Virk.

It re-elected federal Green Party Leader Elizabeth May to be the only member of her party in Ottawa, all which gives her a national platform and media exposure way beyond her clout.

With narrow margins in some districts, including Courtenay-Comox, a tally of absentee votes and ballot recounts starting May 22 could still determine the final victor.

"Site C is being constructed for an industry that does not exist, the LNG industry, and so desperate are the BC Liberals to actually land LNG that they sign contracts to subsidize LNG ... to the tune of 6 cents a kilowatt hour", said Weaver.

However, the Greens' and New Democrats' stance on electoral reform may be a deal breaker with the Liberals, Harrison said.

Jim Benninger knows that a lot of people think the difference between a Liberal majority or minority government in British Columbia is resting on his shoulders.

In the birthplace of Greenpeace, Clark faced down environmental opposition to back Kinder Morgan Inc's Trans Mountain oil pipeline expansion and Petroliam Nasional Bhd's proposed US$27 billion liquefied natural gas-export project in order to get Canadian energy exports to Asian markets. British Columbians voted for action on climate change.

In the 2017 election, the Greens ate into the NDP vote, and likely denied the NDP a majority government.

There are 87 seats in the legislature.

Even though sparks flew between Horgan and Weaver during the campaign, Horgan says he and Weaver have a "range of issues in common".

"We both believe that the disparity between those who have and those who haven't clearly has got out of control", Weaver said.

The final results are expected by May 24, and it's anyone's guess what B.C.'s legislature will look like. We saw that in our polling where Green and NDP supporters were excited about their party's outlook and the Liberal supporters didn't share the same level of enthusiasm for their party.

The Greens doubled their popular vote from eight per cent in 2013 to 16 per cent Tuesday, said Kathryn Harrison of UBC.

Our interactive results tracker above will update in real time as votes are counted. The Green Party won three seats, but is now poised to have disproportionate sway.

"They want us to work together collaboratively and across partisan lines", said Clark, who was trying to win the party's fifth straight majority government.

However, if the results are confirmed, Harrison said the Liberals and New Democrats may be forced to compromise with the Greens or face another election.

A return of the BC Liberals tonight under Clark would largely maintain course, amid some promises to reduce MSP premiums and cap tolls on the Port Mann and Golden Ears bridges.
